The answer is no--despite a flurry of news stories last week that Hollywood was preparing to scuttle the code in favor of individual review of each film on its merits of taste and moral- ity. But the movie' companies are definitely headed in the direc- tion of a smaller, less stringent code which could be adminis- tered with greater elasticity. The matter of morality on the screen has been a touchy one since the earliest days of films. A prolonged smooch in 'The Kiss (1896) outraged the moralists, Protests have continued to the present day (Kiss me Stupid, What's New Pussycat) and are likely to go on as long as there are movies, But moral attitudes have| changed since 1933, when the major portions of the production code were adopted, |BANS REMAIN Although the code has been altered--the most recent change jwas in 1956--the basic provisos jare the same: No profanity, no Inudity, no glorification of lerime, sin, adultery and so on, Anyone who has seen recent films knows that the code now putting finishing jis loosely enforced. touches to murals on the | For a year and a half, the} | major companies that comprise |the Motion Picture Association lof America have discussed up- paign literature still calls him-|dating the code to meet today's |self the "official" Liberal can-|Standards |didate, Banners are strung, "There is absolutely no truth |across streets here with Mr,/to the reports that we are plan | Dupuis' picture on one side and|ning to abandon the code," Pearson's on the other, |a spokesman, 'The discussions, which may continue for .some Oshawa Diving Club Skin and Scuba Classes For Men & Women . The film industry moves islowly, and it may be months, even years, before actual prac- tice can be' formulated into a revised code, But the change seems inevitable, Will this mean a flood of sa hac ious movies? Probably not, Although some racy films can make a quick dollar, the biggest moneymak- ers (My Fair Lady, Mary Pop-/ lpins, The Sound of Music) are} |those the entire family can en- joy.
