77 THES OSHAWA TIMES, . 'Wednesday, October 6, 1965 From Taxe OTTAWA CP) -- A larger share of personal incomes now {is going into government treas- uries as taxes and into personal savings than it did when Can ada began the current expan- sion period more~ than four years ago, For every $10 of personal in- come at-the present pace of the economy, $1.02 goes in personal direct taxes to federal and pro- vincial governments, And 47 cents goes into personal sav- ings. i But during the second quarter of 1961, when the country had turned the low point of its last recession, personal direct taxes were claiming only 89 cents of every $10 of personal income, And only 45 cents were going into savings, ae The difference is in personal expenditures on consumer goods and services, They took $8.65 cents at the turning-point of the economy in 1961, They now take $8.31 cents. These figures are drawn from the latest government estimate of gross national product and its counterpart, gross national expenditure--the estimated an- nual rate of total production of end-product goods and services. But the proportion of the per- sonal income dollar that goes in the three main categories of where all the money goes to-- direct taxes, personal expendi- tures, and net saving--doesn't take into account the actual growth of personal incomes in the four years. Personal incomes in the sec- ond quarter of 1961 were run- ning at an annual rate of $28,- 092,000,000. The comparable fig- ure for this year is $37,824,000,- 000, a growth of more than one- third. Income taxes, succession du- ties and estate taxes, and mis- cellaneous personal direct taxes amounted to $2,512,000,000 charged against personal in- comes in the second quarter of 1961. Currently they are estimat- ed at $3,84,000,000 -- a gain of more than one half, Of the personal income left) after direct taxes in 1961, amounting to §25,580,000,-| 000, personal expenditures on) goods and services took $24,352,-| 000,000, leaving $1,248,000,000 for net personal saving. | Senate Buys Auto Treaty. WASHINGTON (AP).-- The U.S, Senate Tuesday approved & compromise bill to put into) effect the agreement between the United States and Canada| , Suspending tariffs at the manu-| facturers' level on new automo:' biles and parts. The legislation now goes back to the House of Representatives which is not expected to act be- fore Thursday, The compromise worked out by Senate - House conference! committees tones down a Sen ate provision designed to pro- tect U.S. labor against any ex- cessive transfer of auto indus- try employment to Canadian) plants Under the compromise, dis cretion is left with the presi-| dent in the event that Canada| is felt, after August, 1968, to) have sought by government ac tion alarger slice of the North American market than ac- counted for by natural growth:| The Senate had written in aj requirement that the president/ reimpose tariffs on Canadian cars and parts in such an event, unless Congress ruled]: otherwise. This was dropped. Before Canada signed the} auto agreement last January, | it received undertakings from) the Canadian subsidiaries of General Motors, Ford, Chrys:| ler and American Motors and 12 smaller concerns over three years, } The undertakings included; $260,000,000 more by the big) four beyond normal Canadian' market growth which has been averaging eight per cent a year or more. The Canadian target is to raise its slice of the North American market to about six! per cent from the current four per cent Youth Accent In CS Also TORONTO (CP)--W. G. Scott a former employment special- ist with the Ontario regional of fice of the National Employ ment Service says Ontario gov ernment departments discrim inate against workers over 40 Mr. Scott told the legisla ture's select committee on ag ing Tuesday that the govern ment's policy on hiring older * workers is more advanced than private companies, but several) departments seem to consider youth as the main asset of @ po-| tential employee He asked the committee to/ use its influence to abolish dis crimination against older work ers by government and firm carrying out government con tracts. 24-OZ LOAVES REG.
