AER SETI 6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, September 25, 1965 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR verything From Soup To Nuts' THE "SALMONBELLIES" have gone home -- they boarded their train in Toronto last night but the East-West sports rivalry is still very much alive around these parts, Still in lacrosse activity, we find the New Westminster sen- iors clobbered Brooklin 17-7 last night, to even up The Mann Cup championship finals set at three wins apiece. At the * time of writing, we are not positive when the 7th and de- ciding game is to be played, but we have an idea it is to- night, The Junior "Salmonbellies" went back home singing the praises of Oshawa's hospitality. KINSMEN STADIUM will be the scene of Oshawa's first Canadian championship soccer game, tonight at eight o'clock, when the Oshawa Italia meets Vancouver "Fire- fighters" in a sudden-death game for the Dominion title. The "Smokies" arrived in Oshawa yesterday and last night were hosted at an informal reception. Today noon, the teams will be the guests of The City of Oshawa, at a luncheon session, also of the informal type. Yards of copy concerning both clubs, their fine records of this summer season, etc., have been written and (we hope) read and now all that re- mains is for a big turnout of sports fans, at Kinsmen Sta- dium tonight, to witness this championship soccer classic, No other Oshawa team has ever got this close to a Canadian soccer championship. It's pted that, except for their own small groups of dedicated fans, soccer doesn't draw large crowds in this city and as a result, the game has to operate on a tight financial budget. With this in mind, it is hoped that for this exceptional attraction tonight a lot of sports-minded fans who perhaps have never attended or seen a full-length soccer game, will support this event. It should be a real soccer treat and win-or-lose (they'll play to a finish) our Oshawa Italia Club is deserving of all-out support from the Oshawa sports public. They have given the game a big boost here. Tonight presents an opportunity for local la- crosse fans, baseball and softball enthusiasts, hockey lovers and, in short, shorts fans of every type, to show some sup- port for a deserving group. CITY CHAMPIONSHIP softball finals continue tonight and next week, with Jay Cees and Genosha Aces playing tonight at Alexandra Park, in the second game of the 3-out- of-5 Juvenile title round. They go again on Monday night, in the third game of the series, and if Tony's are not playing at home on Wednesday night, the Juveniles will play the fourth game of their finals, should a fourth game be neces- sary. In the Major division, it's Gale's Lumber vs Bad Boys, for the 'City Championship" softball crown, with the first game of this 3-out-of-5 set going on Tuesday night at eight o'clock and the second game on Thursday night, same time, This is the final softball series of the season. Only one team in this area is still in the running for an Ontario champion- ship, namely Brooklin "Concretes' who open their 2-out-of-3 Southern: Ontario final series, tonight in Brooklin, against Wingham. Second game is in Wingham, next Saturday, with the winner of the series going to Northern Ontario on the Thanksgiving weekend, for the All-Ontario finals, in OASA Intermediate '"'C" play. OSHAWA GENERALS had another stiff workout, last night at Bowmanville Arena. Tonight, they play Toronto Mariboros, in Whitby Arena and on Sunday, the Generals play in Peterborough. The Liftlock City team is rated as "the-team-to-beat" in OHA Junior "A" ranks this year -- With the defending Memorial Cup champions, Niagara Falls Flyers also admitted to be top contenders for the OHA title. On Tuesday, Generals visit Niagara Falls and then on Thurs- day, they're "at home" for the first time, with Toronto Marlboros as the visitors, Friday night, the Generals visit London. With 52 aspirants at the camp, coach "Bep" Guidolin is having a busy time of it. Tony's took their "hitting bats" with them to Kew Beach and pounded out 14 hits off starting-pitcher Marshall and Smith, who relieved him in the third inning. : Meanwhile, Ron Taylor turn- ed in a fine seven-hit pitching performance, keeping the Ran- dall-Roy safeties scattered, ex- cept for the fifth frame. Tony's 8th and final tally came in the 7th when Elliott opened with his third hit of the game. He was forced by Suddard, who advanced on a bobble and scor- ed on Gord Wilson's single, his second safety of the night. El- liott's triple and two singles, McMahon's pair of homers, plus two-hit contributions by Oldfield and Wilson, constituted the bulk of the Oshawa attack.
