In preceding articles the students' report dealt with the question of adequate low cost housing, the need for a hospital with- in the town and, parklands. WHITBY (Staff) -- Schools and parks should be located in conjunction with one another to provide the most advantage for the community. Through such practice schools gain additional recreation space while parks are boosted by recreational facilities. This consideration outweighs any advantage which might be assumed from separation of the two facilities, it has been sug- sted. When the town elders or school board propose a new site for a primary school they should not allow their decision to be in- fluenced by suitability of ad- joining property as parkland, the students advise. The school location should be determined a consideration of the safety school trips. All primary schools should be a short walk- ing distance from homes within the area they serve, These areas should also lie within major arterials so no child is required to cross a large traffic artery on the way to school, there is still a definite need for a@ community centre in the true sense of the word, Such a centre would be available for use of both adults and children, be- coming a central meeting place and cultural development pro- ject. Offering a variety of facili- ties the community centre could be regarded as a 'must,' Plans for the conversion of the former Ontario County Build- ing on Centre st. has been sug: gested as a centennial project. Such a development could be of carried out as soon as possible, the students advised. DAY NURSERY situation, the survey indicates a definite need for a day nursery. In their investigation and study of the municipality the post- graduate students discovered the town's major welfare problem revolves around the number of divorce and desertion cases. Such problems were classed as a direct result of these two main elements, The students suggest that in most cases the woman has been left without an adequate income with which to raise her family. In such a situation the case for the working mother is classed as highly debatable. If the mother has young child- ren she might be advised to remain at home and accept the welfare given out by the town School crossing guards could) be employed where it is im- possible to locate primary echools in central districts, it 'was suggested. GENERAL COMMUNITY NEED Whitby schools could serve thé welfare department. The choice, however, should be open to the mother, the decision left up to ~ to finalize. A day nursery would provide her with the opportunity to work at a full-time job if she so de- sired, Such a nursery could also Black And White Show Outstanding PORT PERRY (TC) -- Nine- ty head of Hoistein "cattle wera shown by 23 exhibitors at the 29th Ontario County Black and White Show held Monday in eoniunction with Port Perry fair. The senior cham- pion female was shown by 0. Chambers and Son who also won the grand champion female award. E casion arose as it invariably does, Such a facility is proposed and should be incorporated in the town, preferably located at the community centre.
