We i , |} Street Widening Job Will Affect Sidewalks WHITBY (Staff) -- The street widening construction program, planned for Dundas st. e. by the Ontario Department of High- ways, will have an effect on both existing and non-existing sidewalks in this area, it was noted this week by the Whitby Town Council. On the recommendation of the town engineer, an existing side- walk construction policy, estab- lished by the council, may be considered, prior to acceptance of the Department's design plans. : The policy, in effect in the town, will mean new sidewalk construction on Dundas st. e. from Craydon st. on the north side to the eastern limits to the town and, from Hopkins st. 'on the south side to the eastern limits of the town and, from Hopkins st, on the south side to the eastern limits. This provi- sion is subject to further dis- cussion with the department of highways. Should the new sidewalk pol- icy be followed, the construc- tion would be developed under Section 8 of the Local Im- provement Act with the town assuming 50 per cent of the cost. The particular section of the act refers to Safety Sidewalks only. Sidewalks now. in existence which may have to be disrupted during the road. widening con- struction could possibly be the, responsibility of the town, a mu- nicipal "official explained. walks was adopted by the coun- cil on Feb. 1 of this eyar follow- ing a special meeting on Jan, 21 to discuss setting up of a pol- iey. The sidewalk policy, currently in effect in town, deals with safety sidewalks and sidewalks petitioned for by ratepayers. Should a petition for a_ side- walk be received by council the 'construction costs would be 100 per cent to the petitioners. In ithe case of safety sidewalks the municipality assumes 50 per cent of the cost. . School Superintendent Assumes His WHITBY (Staff) -- Whitby's new Superintendent of Public?
