TOA THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, July 28, 1965 ? From Indians To Tourists Is Story Of Port Perry First reports of the Port Perry area and Lake Scugog were carried southward by neighborhood Chippewa Indians te settlers on Isgke Ontario's shore in the vicinity of Osh- awa and Whitby. The Indians, who trapped fur-bearing animals in the Scu- gog area, brought the pelts to Oshawa Harbor to trade. There, the white man learned what lay beyond the frontier. When the settlers began to make their way into the interior of what is now Ontario County, they built trading posts as they went. These posts often became the mucileus of a permanent com- munity. And so with Port Perry. Ontario County's 100th anni- wersary booklet, published in 1955, gives the first event re- lating specifically to the vil- lage (first known as Borelia, then Scugog Village and finally Port Perry) as the buying of a lot and the building of a home by Elias Williams in 1833. Some 10 years later Peter Perry settled in the area. A Chester Draper of Whitby is said to have built the first store in what later became the village It is believed Mr. Perry built a general store in the hamlet and the area then became known as Perry's Corners. Perry began to organize the community to make improve- ments to their area. He was instrumental in proposing the Whitby to Manchester road. He is described as a public and private benefactor, and many farmers are said to have made their farms prosperous because of the help he was always ready to lend to his neighbors. He was a remarkable man of shrewdness and sagacity. And he early saw how much the people of the County would be benefitted by being separated (for municipal purposes) from York Ceunty. Perry became the prime mover in agitating for this separation. Although he did not live to see it, he "laid the sure foundation" for separation and independence. He died in 1851, leaving several daughters and two sons: Robert E. Perry and John Ham Perry. John Ham, after his father's death, played an _ important part in the municipal and poli- cal history of the County. He brought the "separation issue" to a successful conclu- sion. And he was reeve of Whitby Township and warden of Ontario County (1867). The village was separated from the County at the June session, 1871, and became an in- corporatéd village in January, 1872. Population was 2000; area --500 acres, John Ham Perry advocated a railway from Port Perry to | Georgian Bay. This was nulli- | fied by the building of other | lines to the north. However, | after 15 years of agitation, a charter was secured for a rail-/ way line to run from Whitby | to Port Perry. Following this, the village | grew rapidly. (The first grist mill was erected around 1855; 15 years later a directory of the county listed these busi- nesses: foundry, grist mill, steam cabinet factory, planing mill, sash and door factory, woollen mill, stave and heading factory, three gang-saw mills, two shingle factories, two hotels, wagonmakers, blacksmiths, a bank, several general stores). Port Perry became important as a transfer point as goods were taken from the train to lake boats for shipment farther north. Enjoy Your Holiday On the Water at PORT PERRY!
