(CP) Gary Cowan of Kitchener made a brilliant recovery shot and won a berth on Ontario's Will- ingdon Cup team Wednesday. Cowan, competing in the 18- hole qualifying round of the On- tario Amateur golf champion- ship, had to make up two strokes going into the day's play. He waited until the final hole before clinching the last spot on the four-man team which will compete in the na- tional final in Winnipeg Aug. 4. Needing a par five, Cowan into trouble when his drive ded behind trees on the left side of the fairway. He bailed himself out with a great second shot, pulling a four-wood from his bag and slamming the ball 240 yards over the trees and a water ha- zard in front of the green. CHIPPED 20 FEET The ball clipped the branches of a small willow tree and dropped into the fairway, 70 yards from the hole, Cowan p behead 20 feet past the pin and two-putted for his par. The 26 - year - old defending Ontario amateur champion ended up with one-over-par 73. Including the three rounds of last month's Ontario Open mhich also counted towards Willingdon Cup berths, Cowan id a total of 291, one stroke tter than Martin Mason of ronto. Cowan has made the team in eight of the last nine years.
