JAY BECKER (Top record-holder in Masters' Individual Championship Piey) North dealer. North-South vulnerable. Opening lead -- king of clubs. It is frequently possible to prove, after a hand is over, that declarer should have made a contract which failed; however, one should always be careful to base such a conclusion on a fair. analysis of the play, and not on hindsight stimulated by a_ view of all four hands. South went dawn one in this deal, and the question is wheth- er he should have made the contract. West led the A-K and janother club, on which South discarded a diamond. Declarer then cashed the ace of spades, the ace of hearts, and ruffled a heart. When he now led the queen of spades, * East took it with the king and.. returned a heart, permitting' est to score the setting trick with the ten of spades, South was unlucky to run into a 6-2 heart break and an overruff position as well. Also, he could have made the con- tract by leading a low spade instead of the queen, but his play of the queen would be hard - to criticize without seeing the opposing hands. However, South did make a. mistake in the hand--a small one perhaps--which turned out to be fatal. It occurred at trick three when he discarded a dia- mond on the ten of clubs. He should have discarded a heart instead. Had he done this, he would. have made the con- tract. After cashing the ace of spades, ruffing a heart, and leading the queen of spades, he would have had smooth sailing. regardless of what East re- turned. By discarding a heart at. trick three he would have been able to ruff a heart without first cashing the ace, thus re- ducing substantially the danger * . Eng. river . Not many . Half ems . (CP) -- Ben Ginter, who left Swan River at 14 with two bits in his jeans and made a fortune in the West, believes he has the background to succeed where giants have given up. Specifically, the Manitoba- born millionaire is sure he can make a pulp mill in Kitimat pay. Just because Mac Millan, Bloedel and Powell River Ltd.-- one of the forest industry's giants--decided they couldn't is no reason in Ben Ginter's mind to hold back. "To me, it's a very interest- ing kind of challenge," he said in an interview. "TI think I can put it together. We're working very fast. I've got as far in a month as anyone else got in two years--industry people, who are supposed to know." He is convinced enough tim-| ber exists in the area. covered| by the tree farm licence to make a mill economic. "There is no reason to believe Ben Gerter Determined ToMake B.C. Pulp Mill Pay there isn't, because: there is," he said flatly. Backing him in that belief are 10 operators from Terrace, B.C., and unnamed European inter- ests who altogether make up the Eurocan Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd. of which Ginter is presi- dent. The company first attracted attention this spring by bidding $12,000,000 for a tree farm li- cence whose assessed value was $340,000. Under British Columbia law, the company to which the li- cence had been assigned had to match the $12,000,000 bid, or lose it to Ben Ginter. The company ponied up the $12,000,000 and kept the licence, with a certain amount of dark muttering, and the names of Ginter and Eurocan took on added meaning in the industry. Ginter landely denied any "fun and games" in connection with the $12,000,000 bid--or any spite, either "I don't live like that. Dawson Housing Develop- ments Ltd. a subsidiary of Dawson Construction Co., hopes to fill what it regards as an acute need for properly plan- ned communities where one company can co-ordinate all the work, from sewers to car- pentry. Jack W. Poole, 31, formerly of Engineered Building Ltd. of Calgary and general manager of Dawson Housing Develop- ments, says the company is prepared to take over a town- site at any phase in its con- struction or take any part in its development. "If we take it over from the beginning, then we'd hire plan- ning experts to do their work before our companies could take over," The companies' referred to are Dawson subsidiaries or af- filiates which. will do the actual work. Dawson is directing construc- tion of a townsite at Fraser Lake near the Endako moly- bdenum mine development in north-central B.C. The $1,000,000 contract calls for construction of 81 single- family homes and a 96 - unit single men's quarters. This summer a 30-room hotel and a shopping centre are expected to be started. The townsite may have a population of 2,500 by 1970 when the $20,000,000 mine is due to go into operation.
