Hue: A V Free From Scars HUE, South Viet Nam (AP)--| Barely touched by the war, an- cient Hue remains one of the calmest and most beautiful spots in South Viet Nam al- though only 55 miles from the North Vietnamese border. As the former imperial cap- ital of Viet Nam, Hue still is the intellectual and cultural cen- tre,. While fighting goes on in the nearby jungles, it retains its placid charm. A city with palaces, royal tombs and lush lotus ponds, Hue lies along the banks of the gen- tly flowing River .of Perfumes. It is clean and well-kept. Many of the 2,000 U.S. servicemen in Hue believe it is the most pleas- ant city in South Viet Nam. | Hue so far has resisted the commercialization and quicken- ing pace of life in Saigon and Da Nang. But as more Amer- icans pour into the area this may change. A highlight of Hue's beauty is the walled imperial city, Other wars and time, however, have ravaged many of the ornate monuments first erected in the early 19th century under the reign of Emperor Gia Long. Although its days as an im- perial court ended when Empe- ror Bao-Dai was deposed by| congress in 1955, Hue remained in the spotlight when Ngo Dinh Diem became president of the newly-created Republic of Viet Nam that year. Two of Diem's brothers held control over central Viet Nam, with Hue as the seat of family power. Ngo Dinh Thuc, a Ro-| man Catholic archbishop, was said to have acquired large real| estate and business holdings for, both the church and family. He now is in exile in Europe. The other brother, Ngo Dinh) Can, was executed following Diem's overthrow and murder in November, 1963. He had ruled central Viet Nam with a power- ful police force and ideological strictness. Hue today is a potential boil- ing point for the political and religious strife that has plagued ET EE II OE LN SRS Se 6 pepe pea operated University of Hue and produces some of the nation's most militant students and pro- fessors. Student anti - govern- ment demonstrations often have been held in Hue. As a religious centre of power, Hue also is the home of the venerable Trich Tri Quang, the leading Buddhist spokes- man. The city has an estimated 35,000 Catholics, setting the stage for religious rivalry. | While outwardly calm itself, Hue is part of a province that some military spokesmen say could become embroiled over- night in the war. Government troops have made contact with) the Viet Cong only a few miles) outside Hue on several large- scale operations.
