On July 4 at the home in Mrs. Charles Broughton (Cath- erine Oke), a family reunion was held, attended by all the descendents of Thomas Emmett now living. Joining Mrs. Broughton and her husband were their four children, Ted, Dick and Jim Broughton, all of Whitby, and Catherine (Mrs. Jack Cham- bers) of Burlington, together with their families, including nine Broughton grandchildren. The other grandchildren of Thomas Emmett attending the event were Mrs. Broughtcz's brothers, Emmett Oke of Whit- by, and Edward Oke of Lind- say, with his son, Douglas, and family; and her first cousins, Miss Hazel Emmett of New York, and Mrs. James A. Duff (Eugene Emmett) of Toronto. With Mrs. Duff were her hus- and, daughter Margaret, and son, Emmett, also of Toronto. Thomas Emmett married Han- nah Strickland, a member of a well-known pioneer family of the Whitby area. Included in the gathering were Hannah Strickland Emmett's nephews, Dr. William Harding of Balti- more, Ont.; his brother, Thom- as, of Toronto; their wives, and Dr. Harding's son, William, Oth- er direct Strickland descendents included Miss Agnes Strickland of Oshawa and Mr. Charles Clemence and Mr. Norgrove Cle- mence, both of whom farm near Whitby. They were accompanied |by their wives. | Many of the members of the at Almonds United Church at the Whitby-Pickering Town Line, where their ancestors worship- ped in the last century. Of particular interest to those assembled was the view of a copy of the Strickland family crest which features an Amer- ican turkey -- an ancestor hay- ing introduced the first turkey to England in the 1530's, 90 years before the Pilgrims land- ed. A most interesting family tree of the Strickland family, compiled by Dr. William Hard- ing showed those present the entire geneology back to 1727. | BROCK -- Whitby One Complete Program ."™.
