James Montgomery, who bap- tized Luci Johnson into the Roman Catholic Church, said today the rite was requested by the U.S. president's daughter and he fulfilled the laws of his church. The priest declined to com- ment specifically on criticism of his action expressed by Rt. Rev. James A. Pike, bishop of the Episcopal (Anglican) diocese of California. Bishop Pike, in a sermon in San Francisco Sunday called the baptismal ceremony "'a di- rect slap at our church," in which the 18-year-old Luci for- merly was a communicant, The bishop said Luci had been baptized in the Episcopal Church and the Roman Catholic Church recognizes the validity of baptism in other branches of Christian faith. He raised no question as to the propriety of Luci's conversion to Roman Catholicism but said the repeti- tion of the baptismal ceremony Friday was "totally void of any sacramental effect and thus sacrilegious." Bishop Pike, who was bap- tized and brought up as a Roman Catholic, was received into the Episcopal Church as an adult. He was not baptized a second time. WAS LUCI'S WISH Asked for comment on Bishop Pike's statement, Father Mont- gomery replied: "T have nothing to say about Bishop Pike's comments." But in general reference to the ceremony he emphasized that it was Luci's. wish. "1 did what she requested and fulfilled the laws of the church," he said. "I did what thousands of. other priests would have done and they have agreed with me." He said Luci requested the baptism because she wished in conscience to be sure she was meeting the requirements of the Roman Catholic Church, "I made sure she met the re- quirements of the church and fulfilled her wish. Thus, you may call it a conditional send tism.' The New York Times reported} that the re-baptism had roused) puzzlement and some regret in Vatican circles. PIKE JUSTIFIED At the Vatican, an American priest, who holds an important Vatican post, said: "The principle of indiscrimi-| nate re-baptism is very unecu-| menical, to say nothing of canon} law prohibitions. "If that was the case with| Miss Johnson, then Episcopal-| ians are perfectly justified in feeling as they do. "Canon law is very specific] in forbidding indiscriminate con- ditional re-baptism. A_ re-ad- ministering of the sacrament is to be done only when there is) prudent doubt about the fact of a prior baptism or about its validity." Roman Catholic teaching is that baptism is a sacrament which confers an indelible char- acter upon the soul and thus cannot be repeated if once re- ceived validly. The Vatican itself had no comment. U.S. 'SCOTSMEN' POOR REPLICAS STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) They had a problem get- ting the caber airborne Monday at the 42nd annual Scottish Highland Games. About 12,000 spectators turned out, some in kilts, for the muscle - straining competition sponsored by the Round Hi!1. Scottish Games Association. None of the 19 contestants was able to throw the caber at its original length of 19 feet, five inches. Following tradition, the officials sawed off a piece, but still no one could make the required end-over-end toss. After two more cuts, the pole was down to a tossable 12 feet, eight inches, and Bill Depperman, 23, of Chappaqua, N.Y., won the event.
