RACE AGAINST HARVARD Vesper's first race is Thurs- day against unbeaten Harvard University--a struggle of giants that has tended to overshadow anything else in the regatta preliminaries. Harvard has beaten 14 different crews in the United States this season. By contrast, Vesper fought only the American Henley at Worcester, Mass., where it fin- ished four lengths up on Cor- nell. No Russians are competing at Henley this year and it seems likely the winner of the Vesper- Harvard clash will meet a Ger- man crew in the final of the Grand Challenge Cup. The famed Olympic silver medal- lists, Ratzeburg from West Ger- many, are drawn against the TSC East Berlin crew on the second day of the regatta. Both German crews were due to ar- rive today. The Vesper crew arrived on the Thames Monday and promptly opened training for the regatta in a patched - up at. On the water within hours of arrival, the Philadelphia crew went through an impressive] hour-long workout. The eight sweepswingers rowed a good tive miles and came back look- ing as fresh as if they'd been no farther than the neighbor- hood drugstore.
