Food leavings YOUR HEALTH Dear Dr. Molner: We have a neighbor who has just come home from the hospital. He had an operation for cancer of the lung and it is still draining. We will be called-upon to help take care of him, and as mich as we would like to co-operate, we are hesitant to do so be- cause we have been told by friends that some cancers are started by viruses and we could possibly contract the disease. What is your opinion?--Mrs. C. Scientifically, the relationship between viruses and cancer is a source of much study. I cannot quarrel with the newspapers for reporting what is done and said in this 'regard. At the same time, 1 don't think that people should jump to the conclusion you and your friends have reached. On the basis of everything known, there is not the slight- ei chance that risk is involved in helping take care of your neighbor with lung cancer. There isn't even the faintest Causes Of Cancer Are Still Obscure. By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD suspicion among those who study cancer that you can con- tract the disease from someone else. It is true that some animals, but might few at that, can be |caused to develop cancer. by giv- jing them a certain virus. The outstanding example is a parti- cular strain of mice. If the young are nursed by mothers having a specific virus in the milk they later usually get can- cer. If they are nursed by foster mouse-mothers not carrying the virus, they don't get cancer. Yet even so, viruses are not the whole story. This mouse jmilk will not cause cancer in other animals. So what does it all mean? It means, I believe, that there is no single cause of cancer. A combination of factors is in- {volved--heredity, irritants, age, Isnecies and others. Viruses? Evidently they -are involved. in some cancers, perhaps in all. Or perhaps not. We just don't know. 9--Bewitched +3--Show Of The Week 4--I've Got A Secret 8:30 P.M. 9--It's Your Move T--No Time for Sergeants 4--Andy Griffith Show 10:15 11:00 11--Morning 8-2--Concent: 4--Andy of 9:00 P.M. ay l--Twelve O'clock High 9--Wanted Dead or 11:38 Alive $-2--Andy Willlams #-2--Jeop: 7--Wendy and Me 7--Price 63--Danger Man 4--The Lucy Show 9:30 P.M 9--Take A Chance 7--The Farmer's Daughter ard: Is 10:08 P.M 11--The Merv Griffin Show 7--Ben Casey 4--CBS Reports 10:30 P.M. 3--Musical Showcase 1:00 11-9-8-7-6-4-3-2--News; Show 4--Night Metre TUNSDAY 8:00 A.M. 4--Captain Kangeres 8:30 AM, 9--News: Miss Helen irl Talk 4--Mike's Carnival 2--Mickey Mouse Club | 2--Ann Southern Show Ss A.M, &-2--What's This Song 7--Tralimaster 4--i Love Lucy | 9--Unele Bobby %--Toronto Today 6--Music And News 4-The McCoys 1--Camera On Canada @-2--Call My Bluff TELEVISION LO 4--Ster Performance Reed 3--Popeye and Pails 12:18 P.M 9--Dear Charlotte 4--Speaker of the jare Hitchcock 12:30 P.M 11--First Edition News 9--From Scarboro College 8-2--I'l| Bet 7--Father Knows Best ite 4--Search for Tomorrow 3--Noonday Report 12:45 P.M. 11--Racing Forum | 4--Guiding Light 1:00 P.M. 1}--Interpol Calling 9--Summertime &--Matinee 7--Afternoon Show File and Sports P.M. inal P.M, P.M. Chimney sweeps are much more likely to get cancer in one particular part of the. body (the scrotum) than other people are. But not all chimney sweeps have cancer. there must be other factors in- volved. Cigarettes evidently seem to cause .cancer in some people. A jagged tooth, mildly irritating tender mouth membranes, can do the same. A mole, chafed for years by a collar, bra, belt, or whatnot, sometimes turns can- cerous. Long-continued, excess- ive X-ray burns have caused it too. How can we say in such cases that viruses cause cancer? It may be that some viruses, under some conditions, might in time act as irritants. Maybe there are no cancer viruses, but just.viruses that in certain cir- cumstances may play a part. Nobody, knows, but not for lack of trying to find out. And all the millions of cancer cases that have been closely observed, we have yet to find reason to think that cancer is passed from one person to another. If it were, it would have shown by now. My advice, and my wish, is that you forget your fears and help take care of your neighbor. Besides, the operation may have cured him. Lung cancer is dif- ficult to discover early enough to do much good, yet surgery does cure a gradually increas- ing number of such cases. Dear Dr. Molner: Is it all rigit for pregnant women to use artificial sweeteners?--MRS, P. IT's perfectly all right to use This hand was played by Syl- vester Lowrey, of Philadelphia. He became declarer at five clubs on the bidding shown, and West led the king of spades. Lowrey had quite a problem to solve. In order to make the contract he had to restrict his losses to a trump trick and a diamond trick. This was quite a task to undertake, since the po- tential losers consisted of pos- sibly a heart, two diamonds, and one or more trumps, The problem was further com- plicated by the shortage of en- tries to dummy. Lowrey could get to dummy easily enough with the ace of clubs, but how could he then lead a club to- wards the queen and also at- tend to his diamond losers at the same time? Lowrey solved the problem in an unusual fashion. He won the spade lead with the ace and led- the queen of diamonds at trick two! This extraordinary play was very effective and eventually brought home the contract. Wes took the queen with the king and returned a spade, which was ruffed. Lowrey now played a club to the ace and led the ten of dia- monds, finessing when East followed low. (It would not have done East any good to cover with the jack, since declarer could then return to dummy with the nine.) Lowrey next Jed a club from dummy, losing to the king, but then could not be stopped from making the rest of the tricks. It does seem a little odd that Lowrey was able to lead twice from dummy even though there was only one apparent entry to it, but his unusual play at trick two made this possible. Entry problems occasionally do arise to plague the declarer and make his task difficult if not impossible, but a little in- genuity at the right time and place can do a world of good. Bus Strikers Could End It MONTREAL (CP) -- Mont real's 3,900 striking transit em- ployees vote today on a union recommendation which could end or prolong the Montreal Transportation Commission bus strike, now in its 12th day. Optimism that negotiations Friday between: the Montreal Transport Workers' Union (CNTU) and the commission would result in a quick settle- ment were somewhat dashed when a union spokesman re- fused to say whether the execu- tive would ask the employees to accept or reject the wage of- fer, The spokesman said the un- ion executive will meet today before a 10 a.m. general meet- ing of the 2,900 drivers and some 1,000 maintenance men ard, cashiers.
