Is she shirking her home responsibilities? Is she really less a '"'woman" than the full-time homemaker? . dea The answer to these questions probably is 'no'. Yet, in spite of the fact that over half of all working women are married, 'guilt feelings' con- tinue to be common in home- makers, who work outside the home, according to Mrs. Ruth Orvedal, home economist and acting head of Family Life and Management at the University of Maryland. She took part in the recent program on '"'Home Shortcuts for the Working Woman", presented by the Am- erican Home Economics Asso- ciation in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Orvedal ascribes guilt feelings of the working woman to "society's reluctance to ac- cept the dual role of today's woman; pressures on women to achieve perfection as mothers, wives and housekeepers; and the failure of working women themselves to look at the situa- tion with honesty". Here are some _ suggestions which Mrs. Orvedal lieve feelings of guilt and inade- quacy: 1. Face up to the fact that, _ for a person with two jobs, the) home cannot be managed in the} same way it would be if that} were your only job. Decide what is really important to you and! your family, as far as the home- front is concerned. Take a fresh look at your possessions and! procedures. Then eliminate the. offers to) the working woman to. help re-| saving time and energy. 2. Analyze the "shoulds" that, for most women build pressures to achieve perfection on the home front. Are you carrying 'around the feeling that you "should" be the homemaker your own mother was -- or an idealized image of what your husband's mothér was to him? Are you comparing your home with what you see in the ads or on television? The fact is that most of the rigid "shoulds' of yesterday have been eliminated from homemaking today.- In_ this changing world, each individual is free to choose a way of run- ning a home that best suits her- self and her family. Paper plates are as acceptable for breakfast as fine china. Uniron- ed sheets carry no stigina. The husband can take over the cook- ing if he likes. The most ad- mired homemaker on the block probably is.the one who has the courage of her | homemaker convictions, | knows what is right for her fam-!| earner, like her working sister. ily and feels no pressure to con- form to the "'shoulds"' of outside opinion. Watch out for the vicious cir- cle of doing everything yourself, then resenting the fact that others in the family don't pitch in to help. This only increases feelings of guilt. You are the home manager. But this does not mean you are responsible for doing all the work. Discuss with your family which member is best qualified and has the time to handle certain jobs. Then give that person plenty of leeway in how that job is done. Thig will encourage co-opera- tion, as well as inventiveness. Remember that the full - time probably _ suffers from feelings of guilt, just as | you do, She too may blame her- | Self for failure to meet unrealis- |tically high standards on the | homefront. | more, / value as a woman who does not And, more and she will question her go out into the world as a wage- Also 8 BARBER ARTISTS For such an important occasion have your hair groomed. | Telephone 728-6007 EXCLUSIVE HAIR STYLING FOR MEN BG4WILSON RD.S.
