10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, June 18; 1965 rr PORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR verything From Soup To Nuts' ) |. "RICH" MARCH, general manager of Oshawa Tony's, a bombshell on the sports news front, late last bo with the announcement that he had received a re- quest, from Bob "Bid Daddy" Grier, for his release -- and nted same. ~The big sling-shot pitcher lasted only a eer time in his last two appearances and had trouble keeping his pitches out of the slot -- with the result he was hit hard. Actually, we felt in the game here Wednesday, . "Big Daddy" was not hit so hard as so unlucky. New To- ronto batters got a couple of those handle-hit "bloopers" that just barely cleared the infield, one was a broken-bat affair-- 'but they came in bad and so d damage, and funs. The popular Bob Grier has not announced his own plans for the balance of the r._ softball he has until July 15th to sign an ASA certificate -- but there are tumors that he may join Toronto Plating's' Beaches League éntry. And for sure, such Oshawa OASA teams as Gale's r. "B" or Bad Boys (Inter. "'A') could use him on their cia, staff, Bob learned his softball skills in hometown Detroit, but came to Canada first for a tryout with Toronto Argos. He came to Oshawa from Midland, back three sea- gons ago and has proven very popular and effective here, as top moundsman for Oshawa Tony's, in their Beaches Ral success and fine showing at last year's World's Tournament. Tony's visit Toronto Plating on Monday eve- ning, at Kew Beach, when Ron Taylor and Bev Smith will hive to handle the pitching chores. 7-Up Shopsy's play in Qghawa, next Wednesday night. y HOW ABOUT THIS? Ken Lewis, a 20-year-old Kingston ball pitcher (still a Junior) gave up six hits in a twilight me in Kingston, the other night, hit a homer himself to help win the game 5-1 -- then -- he jumped in his car, drove miles to Napanee, where he pitched a no-hitter and also another home run, for his second win of the night. Both games were 9-inning affairs too! & SPORTS QUICKIES -- Jack Nicklaus got off to a bad start in the U.S. Golf Open yesterday but he is confident t he'll' pick up a lot of lost ground, today and tomor- . Veteran Sam Snead is eight strokes behind the leader, Nagle, of Australia. A lot of other big names, such as ie Palmer, Doug Sanders, Charlie Sifford, Juan Rodri- ez, Don January, and Canada's George Knudson, all had id rounds yesterday. . . . PORT CREDIT "Sailors" la- otosse club's president has resigned, in protest to an OLA Yilling granting two over-junior age players to Brookilin. - «a» « "SPEEDY ERNS" beat Port Credit on an overtime geal last night... . JOHNNY BOWER has been named. as year's winner of the J. P. Bickell Memorial Trophy, as team's most valuable player. DAW And Lions Win In Bantam UAWA Local 222 and Lions Club came up with victories Thursday night in the Oshawa Minor Lacrosse Association's Bantam League. 'Led by Tom Simpson's three markers, UAWA downed Jury and Lovell 7-2. Other goal scorers for the winners were Larry Shrigley with a pair, and on Bragg and Ken Sherban singles. Jim Andrews and _ Drew each scored one for Jury. Storie Park Wins Bantam Ball Game Storie Park Bantams came up with a 6-4 win over Fernhill Park Wednesday night in a Bantam League softball con- test. Storie Park fell behind in the third inning when Fernhill scored four runs on a single, two triples and a home run, but that was all for Fernhill as Laz Kliewiez hurled hitless ball from then on. After scoring singles in the second and third, Storie Park took over the lead in the fourth frame, scoring four runs on four singles and a walk. Slemko was the losing pitch- er, allowing seven hits and walking six. Kliewiez gave up just five hits and a pair of walks to pick up the win. Pee Wee Teams In the other contest Lions ib downed Get Together. 5-3, Doug Bannon scoring a pair for the winners. Andy Krontje, Jim Errant and Sid Root counted one each for Lions Club. For the losers it was Peter Blake, Harold Aru and Greg Mills with one each. Local 222 now leads the league Russ Snyder of Baltimore Orioles slides in, to beat the ball to home plate, scoring the winning run _ against New York Yankees, in the son. Yankee catcher Doc Edwards is seen just about to get the ball, on the throw from Tom Tresh. Baltimore won the game 16th inning of last night's marathon thriller in Yan- kee Stadium. Snyder scored from third on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Bob John- Last night's doubleheader, in the Oshawa City and District Softball Association's League, at Alexandra Park, pro- similarity, in that the winner .in each case was the unexpected "underdog" of that particular game. In the curtain-raiser, Oshawa Merchants nosed out the league- leading "Bad Boys' and in the nightcap, Scugog Cleaners Jun- iors defeated the Senior "B" Gale's Lumber, also 5-4. This game was called, due to rain, with two men out in the bottom of the 7th inning, but stands as "played" since the visiting team had their 7th inning batting. PLENTY OF HITTING There was plenty of hitting in the opener as both teams gave their rival pitcher a rough time of it, the winners collecting 11 hits off Ted Jones while Warren Wills, the winner, was nicked for nine safeties. Each team com- mitted a pair of errors. Bad Boys got a run in the sec- ond on singles by George Bra- bin and Bill Berwick, followed by an infield out-and Jones' sac- rifice. In the third, Roger Ree- son singled and Wayne Cheese- man followed with a homer, to make it 3-0. In the fourth, Frank Szyszka opened with a single, advanced on Jones' double and scored after Rich March had walked, when Reeson hit into a force-out. Lone hits by Ted Whiteley and Berwick were all Bad Boys could get off Wills in their last five frames. Merchants got to Jones for their first two runs in the third inning when McClimmond open- ed with a double, Burke walked and then after Seneco's sacri- omon's triple opened the fourth Two Upset Wins With Same Score Major duced 'two games with identical| 5-4 scores and also had another! fice, ""Moe"' Bryan doubled.
