Campbell SPORTS EDITOR "Everything From Soup To Nuts' GREEN GAELS took over undisputed lead of the OLA Junior "A" race, last night in Mimico, when they whipped the 'Mounties' 16-7. The schedule is of course really only two days old, but the Oshawa gutted-stick squad now has two wins. Brampton is in second place, with one win -- they got that last night when they defeated Toronto Township 13-12, in a real squeaker. Mimico won their first one Mon- day, over Long Branch, so they are in third spot, with a one-and-one record. The point into going statistics, at such an early stage, is to bring in the observation that so far, we haven't heard from the team that most clubs feel will be "the-team-to-watch" -- and they are the Hastings Le- gionnaires, coached by. former Peterborough performer "Rock" Batley. Not that. it will be conclusive, but Green Gaels get a chance to think about the comparative strength of Brampton Arinstrongs and Toronto Township, tonight, when Oshawa visits Toronto Township, for an exhibition game, to launch a big minor program, in that area, JOHNNY DAVIS, demon sniper of the Green Gaels, ap- pears determined to add another. Junior OLA scoring title to his trophy list. He has won the title three times, having played in Junior ranks for seven seasons. He was the cir- cuit's top scorer last year again and now, with eight goals in two games, he looks as if, barring injuries, he'll repeat his laurels. Last year, his brother, Terry, playing for Nanaimo, B.C., won the Western Canada senior scoring championship. Back in 1953, he won the Junior scoring title, when playing with Whitby. No wonder goalies shudder when they see the name Davis in a rival lineup. Oshawa's ace not only has one of the fastest shots in the game but his ac- curacy is 'deadly. Added to this, he is the wizard-type ofstick handler, which gets him into. position for one of his great variety of feints and trick shots. Submarine, side-arm, over- head, backwards, he can score from any position he hap- pens to be in, when the opening pops up -- even, we suspect, if he was standing on his head, Like most stars, he can be moody but this is the exception and any night he's turning it on -- it's worth the price of admission alone to see John Davis in action. SOFTBALL PLAYERS performing under the banner of the Oshawa City and District Association, are reminded that their season's schedule appears in today's sports news and each player, as well as team coach, manager, etc., should clip out a copy and keep it in a handy spot, for futuer reference. For that matter, the suggestion is one that the softball fans should also follow. As a glance at the dates will show, there are a lot of doubleheaders this season, in: fact, almost every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, at Alexandra Park. Three Oshawa teams and a Port Perry entry form the new Juvenile league. This growth is a direct reflection on the wealth of softball talent that has graduated in the past two seasons, from the strong Midget League, operated by the Oshawa Minor Softball Association. On many nights, there will be a Juvenile game as the curtain-raiser at Alexandra Park, followed by a "Major" schedule game Four Oshawa teams and Brooklin Concretes comprise the Major circuit ~ the local OASA entries being Gale Lumber (Senior 'B'); Bad Boys (Inter. 'A'); Scugog Cleaners (Junior 'A') and Merchants (Inter. Industrial). On the previous night, in the opening games of the schedule, Oshawa had walloped St. Cath- arines 24-6 while Mimico won, ; 19-16 over Long Branch. FOUR FOR DAVIS The Oshawa attack was paced 7 by Johnny 'Shooter' Davis, with four, goals and three as- sists, closely followed by Ken Thompson, whe scored three goals and was credited with one assist, although his mates felt that the referee deprived Ken of one or two other assist points, justly earned, Thompson played a particu- larly alert game, his numerous breakaway dashes catching the Mimico defence flat-footed on several occasions.
