BRI Rig <a INR 2 CC THREE PLAYERS SUSPENDED Memorial Cup Finals Continue On Schedule . By BOB TRIMBEE EDMONTON (CP) The fourth game of the Memorial Cup junior hockey final be- tween Niagara Falls Flyers and Edmonton Oil Kings will be played in Edmonton as sched- uled tonight, but three players will be out of action with sus- pensions and increased police security has been ordered. Gordon Juckes, secretary- manager of the Canadian Ama- teur Hockey Association, made the announcement after a seven-hour investigation into a brawl which led officials to halt a game Monday night with 3% minutes to play. It was the first time in Memo- rial Cup history that a game was halted prematurely by a 77 fight and it took 25 policemen y A almost 10 minutes to restore or- Te der. game, at this point. Police The Oil Kings officially won were first called into action the game 5-1, their first victory to quell a mob scene that in three starts in the best-of- developed between players seven series. Fifth game is and spectators, at the end of scheduled for Friday, 10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, Mey 12, 1965 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR "Everything From Soup To Nuts' THESE WERE MAYHEM SCENES IN EDMONTON HOCKEY ARENA vented the mixup from reach- ing the severity of the first clash. Juckes said his investigation, which included talks with club managements, a study of a game film, and _ conferences with referee Jim McAuley of Montreal, city police, civic offi- cials and Edmonton Gardens officials, indicated fan control "was not a primary factor of the third-period brawl." He said it was lack of player control on both sides which dis- rupted play and "I can't see how moving the series out of Edmonton will solve this." "However, the action of a small element of the fans which triggered the clash cannot be condoned, I want to emphasize to the publie very strongly that we would expect them to be- have as the public should and if there is any further public interference the game will be called and awarded to the visit- ing team." He expressed satisfac- tion with the work of game offi- cials and said "if there is any repeat of- what happened Mon- day the CAHA will give strong consideration to moving the se- ries to another city." Owner-manager Hap Emms, who asked for a change in the venue of the series because of problems Monday with some fans, said he "is willing to ac- cept CAHA assurances that there will be ample protection ... for my players on the ice, in the penalty box and off the ice." He said he felt badly about the incidents Monday, However, after a meeting with players Tuesday night it was agreed "'to a man to continue the series and to try and win the cup ff 'we can," Juckes said he will remain at least for the fourth game. Despite an announcement the Gardens had suspended book- jings for the series until the in- | vestigation was completed, both clubs worked out Tuesday. The Oil Kings reported Craig Cameron suffered a right shoul- der injury Monday and was a doubtful starter. ill Golds- worthy of the Flyers was in sub-par physical shape after he took several hard checks Mon- day but likely will dress. THE MEMORIAL CUP, Canada's Junior hockey cham- pionship emblem, is still up for grabs, which is perhaps more accurate at that, than saying it's still up for compe- tition. The officials of the two clubs, the committee that runs the Edmonton Arena, along with hockey officials from the OHA and Western bodies concerned, and of course Cana- dian Amateur Hockey Association officers, apparently got thinzs partially ironed out, in their big session last night. Word received this morning is. that three players have been suspended but the fourth game of the series will go tonight, as originally scheduled.. Defenceman Ricky Ley of Niagara Falls and winger Ron Anderson of Edmonton Oil Kings, who had a wild and vicious stick-swinging duel just before the major free-for-all erupted in the third period, have each been suspended for at least tonight's game. Centre Derek Sanderson, who pummelled Oil Kings captain Bob Falken- berg, after the latter was already prostrate on the ice, has been given an "'indefinite suspension"'. Oshawa's Matt Ley- den, OHA President, out there representing this provincial body, has been given the right to protest the "indefinite part. WE WATCHED the video-tape recording of Monday night's game, last night, courtesy of Channel 9. We felt that if they hadn't had the policemen on hand, they might never have started the second period. The brawl at the end of the first frame could be placed right on the doorstep of 'the Edmonton fans who participated. After that, we thought the referee's work was considerably less than adequate. Throughout, heavy boarding, charging and stray elbows and hoisted sticks, were completely ignored. When Edmonton made it 5el, then Flyers knew that game was all over -- and proceeded to settle some scores. Sanderson's repeated pounding of Falkenberg, with the latter on the ice and ob- viously out of commission, was ruled as "deliberate attempt to injure' and this was no understatement, In the fight game --they'd disqualify and also suspend any boxer who struck an opponent already stretched out. Now the story comes out that after the game was called off, three men dragged Sanderson into a first-aid room and beat him up. He suffered several cuts. to the face. Chalk this one up against the Edmonton fans also! They intend to have 50 policemen at the Edmonton Gardens for tonight's game. That in itself is a serious reflection. OSHAWA MINOR Softball Association officers met last night at Simcoe Hall (Simcoe Street) for their initial organ- ization meeting of the season. The turnout was a little dis- appointing, but it was felt that perhaps word had not 'got around" as yet and that more teams, especially in the Kiwanis Bantam League series, would be showing up at the next meeting. With four good Midget teams of last year all having moved up to Juvenile ranks, it seems unlikely that a Midget League will operate this year but on the other hand, there is little doubt that at least one team and perhaps two, will bid for the rights to represent Oshawa in the OASA Midget playdowns. Next meeting has been called by President Joe Victor for, Monday evening of next week, again at 7.30 o'clock and also, at Simcoe Hall (Simcoe Street). All Neighborhood Parks interested in having an entry in the Kiwanis Bantam League, are urged to send a representative to this meeting. AUSTRALIA'S Bruce Crampton uncorked a sizzling 66, 4under-par, in the final round of the "Colonial National In- vitation" golf tournament, which they were able to clean up yesterday and it was good enough to give him top money.
