14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, May 6, 1965 Veteran NHL Performer Says G By STUART LAKE OTTAWA (CP)--Those who maintain that goaltenders are as important to hockey teams as pitchers are to baseball clubs can get an argument from a for- mer National Hockey League netminder, Bill Beveridge, Now 55 and a real estate dealer in nearby Manotick, Ont., Beveridge estimated in an interview that goaltenders are only responsible for up to 20 per cent of their teams' success or failure. Pitchers are 70 per cent of their teams' strength, some ex- perts say. Beveridge, who broke into the NHL in 1929 with the old Detroit Cougars and played with Ot- tawa Senators, St. Louis, Mont- real Maroons and New York Rangers before retiring in the 1942-43 season, believes goalies merely reflect a team's defen- sive strength. "There's very little differ- ence between goalies once they get into the NHL," explained Beveridge who still shudders at the thought of some of the weaker teams he played for. He argues that if Boston Bruins rookie Jack Norris had been the Toronto netminder during the last season there would have been little differ- ence in the number of goals-- 173--scored against the Maple Leafs. And the combination of Johnny Bower and Terry Saw- chuck would have been within three or four goals of the 253 that whistled past Norris and his predecessor Ed Johnson in the Boston net. To Beveridge it's no mystery why Bower should be playing at an age when most players have quit. "Look at the great Leaf de- fence." Opposing forwards who get a clean break says.
