« @ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Scturdey, April 17, 1695 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR "Everything From Soup To Nuts' STAYING POWER put Chicago Black Hawks in this year's Stanley Cup finals, which open tonight at Montreal Forum. Detroit Red Wings punched home the only two goals of the first period on Thursday night, the second, by Gordie Howe, being a perfect jem, the skill of a truly great star in action, but actually, the Wings were not that much better in the first period. In the second stanza, two quick penalties tipped the scales the other way--and they never returned. Bill Gadsby's penalty, with Parker Macdonald already in the sin-bin, was the crucial point. It looked as if the veteran rearguard was sub- stituting rugged and robust action in an attempt to offset the fact that the flying Hawks were getting harder and harder to stop. An elbowing penalty at this point was both careless and costly! Chichawks' Blonde Bomber uncorked one of his sizzlers fo break the goose-egg and Black Hawks were on their way. They were much the better team in the third period as the weary Wings gamely but vainly tried to get back in the running. BOBBY HULL won this series for Chicago! It's true that "Moose" Vasko played a much improved brand of hockey and Ravilich did well too, but Pierre Pilote, while still polished, lacked his old-time zip and leadership. Glenn Hall has been brilliant in the nets for Chicago in their past few games and up front, Stan Mikita scored the winning goal, Nesterenko has been a steady standout, with Esposito, Mohns and Mc- Kenzie all great in victory--but taken all-round, like an orange, Bobby Hull has been the key factor in this semi-final series. He came back from a series of injuries to play abso- jutely brilliantly in this seven games--a fact that would stand even if he hadn't been the top scorer in this series. Amazingl strong, both physically and as a skater, his crashing collisions put two or three of the Detroit club on the limp and through- out it all, he set the pace. And there was another factor also-- the Red Wings are basically "an old team" and while injuries certainly hurt their chances, the fact remains they have a lot of veterans on their roster and over the long haul, they ran out of legs. THE FINALS should be really something. In Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Kenny Wharram, Black Hawks have some out- standing scoring threats but the Canadiens, with a well-balan- ced club that, in the main, is younger and faster, has their scoring power spread a little thinner perhaps, but over a larger area of their line-up. Canadiens figure they have the players to cope with Hull's blazing dashes and up front, cer- tainly Henri Richard should give Mikita quite a duel. With Hall at his best, Canadiens haven't got, we feel, the edge in goal- tending which the season's records might indicate. On defense, With the loss of Montreal's ace, Jacques Laperriere, the two teams are about equal. This could easily become a back-check- ing series, with the ultimate outcome depending on the respec- tive skill of the goalies. Both Billy Reay and '"'Toe" Blake are sure of their jobs for another year, so there's no angle there. Let's sit back and prepare to enjoy another great Stan- ley Cup final series. It could prove one of the most exciting in years!
