"ee G. HODGSON What is your reaction to the new higher taxes? Whitby residents replied: Morray Hicks: I built my home under the VLA, 13 years ago and taxes were $140. This year they're $365 and I've sold half my property. I'm tired of rent- ing my home from the town. Tony Agius: It's murder! It's getting to a_ point when I can't afford to keep my house. The $400 a year taxes are breaking my back. Earl Hargrave: Taxes are too high. They went up in Dovedale subdivision de- spite the fact we paid for roads and sewer as local improvements. We'll clear the air when we vote for council next time. CHAS. MESHER M. HICKS J. OTTENBRITE E. HARGRAVE Charles Mesher: | feel council does have a prob- lem and we're not the 'only community expeienc- ing tax hikes. But at the rate of the budget this town is running on we should have gold-plated streets. Joseph Ottenbrite: I real- ize the cost of living has climbed and the town's oper- ating costs are bound to go up. I'm not happy with taxes but realize not much cam be done. I'd prefer a slow in- crease rather than a sudden hike in mill rate. PORT PERRY (TC) -- Since coming to Port Perry to take over the pastoral duties of the Port Perry United Church, Rev-| erend Mr. Alec Rice and Mrs. Rice have devoted a great deal of time and effort to the young people of this community and have endeavored to start a worthwhile organization called the High C Group.
