You may not agree with the three spade bid, which was obviously risky, but South was largely influenced by the part score of 40 which he and his partner had. If you examine all four hands, it would seem that South should go down one, since he apparent- ly has two spades, two dia- monds and a club to lose. But South made the contract, and, the way the cards were divided, the defence could not do a thing to prevent it. West led a diamond. East cashed two diamonds and shift- ed to a low club, the queen be- ing covered by the king and ace. Declarer crossed to his hand with the king of hearts and played a low trump towards the queen. West could not afford to go up with the ace, since this would have cost him one of his two natural trump tricks and handed South the contract on a silver platter. So he played the ten instead and dummy won the trick with the queen. Declarer now cashed the A-Q of hearts, discarding a club, and then ruffed a heart, thus estab- lishing the fifth heart in dum- my as a trick. He then played the jack of diamonds, Again West was faced with a hopeless choice. He could ruff with the jack of spades, all right, but in that case dummy would discard the club loser. Al- ternatively, West could discard a club and allow declarer to ruff the diamond in dummy. When he chose the latter course, declarer was able to dis- card his last club on the eight of hearts and thus make the con- AS THEY HAVE EPARTMENT DI eat JULIET JONES OT BY A FARMER, THE SHIPWRECKED HIS.
