10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Scturdey, April 3, 1965 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR "Everything From Soup To Nuts' "NEUTRAL ICE" games are now just a thing of the past! Almost the only time they are staged now is when two teams, each with only natural ice facilities, or very small arenas -- and usually located a long distance apart -- agree to meet at a midwayepoint, for convenience and accommodation. The cost of operating an artificial ice arena is high and it means usually that when the "home team" is eliminated, they shut down almost immediately. This is the reason for these ex- tended playoff series now -- you still draw better crowds in your. own "rink"? -- than on neutral ice -- in most cases, Here in Oshawa, the Civic Auditorium will officially close its winter season on Sunday night, when the fifth and deciding game of the Oshawa Senior League championship finals, will be played. The game is due to start at 7:30 o'clock and brings Beaupre's Spurs and Bad Boys into the forefront, battling for the title. It's your last chance to see a hockey game at the Auditorium this season -- why not take it in? ONE OTHER 1965 hockey championship will be decided to- morrow, in an afternoon game, at the Brooklin Community Arena, This is the fifth and deciding game of the UAW Hock- ey League's championship finals, between Versafood and Tony's Refreshments. These two clubs have had a terrific final series and the sudden-death fifth game should be a classic Also on Sunday afternon, and also at 2:00 o'clcok, by the way, the GM North Plant League has: a final series game, out at the Port Perry Arena. This brings together Lord's Jewellers and Dyett's Sports. It's the third game of a best- of-five series, with Dyett's currently out in front, with one win and a tie. And speaking of playoff hockey, local puck patrons shouldn't forget the big game out at Uxbridge on Monday night, 8:30 o'clock, when Brooklin "'Redmen" play Gravenhurst Indians, in the third game of their series. Last night's game in Uxbridge was the second of the series, with Brooklin having won the opener in Gravenhurst, earlier in the week, by a 6-5 score. TONIGHT, when they have finished the final game and pre- sented the very 'special "Pot-Hunters' Trophy" that has been designed particularly for this event, they'll have officially closed the 'Mixed Curling" season, at the Oshawa Curling Club. The ladies' section will hold their closing on Friday of next week and the annual "'Plumber's Night" is a week from tonight. But, in recognition of the end of the "mixed curling" activities, we dare to pass along this interesting poem -- contributed by Whitby's well-known curling enthusiast, 'Bert'? Hodges. TO THE MEN The experts are writing every day About the curling game we should play; Richardson, Lerner, Gervais and the lot Explain professionally how the game is fought. They tell us how we should be good sports And describe the angles, the raises and ports. But, oddly enough, they give short information On the most important of all -- concentration! No matter how well, a person can play With his style, his slide and delivery His team will never make win, place or show, If he doesn't concentrate, starting to throw. This probably is the best of advice You can get free of charge, for a game played on ice. But how can we men concentrate in the hacks, When our gals all wear those tight-fitting slacks? There are those who will say that we shouldn't mention That this type of thing distracts our attention. Bill Lockwood was elected } Rugger Club for the year 1965, at a meeting held at the Osh- awa Civic Auditorium. Lock- wood was the captain of the team last year, The Oshawa Vikings will be commencing their seventh sea- son in 1965 and will open their Spring schedule on April 10 against Toronto Irish at Osh- awa's Lakeview Park. The Spring schedule will in- clude games with Deep River, Balmy Beach, Toronto Wander- ers, Brampton, Toronto Barbar- ians and Toronto Old Boys, and the Oshawa team will compete in the QQuebec seven-a-sides at Montreal on May 22 and the On- tario seven-a-side at Toronto on June 7. This will be the last date for playing during the Spring season.
