KIM NOVAK One of the screen's most alluring stars, Kim Novak, finally married this week. Miss Novak, 32, whose car- eer began with "Picnic" 10 years ago, married her latest co-star, Richard Johnson, 37. Both will be seen in the forthcoming "Tom Jones-type'" English epic, 'Moll Flanders'. Although Mao Tse-tung has little love for -- Johnson and his policies in the Far East, words of en- couragement have come from Madame Chiang Kai- Shek. The wife of the For- mosan president says she is pleased that the president has taken such a firm stand . on Viet Nam. Most cabbies can't wait for a fare. There is one in Calgary that can, however. Murray Shumate amuses himself with his knitting while waiting on customers. Cinema zany Jerry Lewis suffered a skull fracture as a result of a fall during a television rehearsa] last week. He was back on the job Tuesday, though, mak- ing ready for his new film, "The Family Jewels'. Through a court ruling, Vince Dantzer, 41, became mayor of Edmonton this week. The former Alder- man replaces William Haw- relak, who was suspended over alleged land holdings. Hawrelak is appealing the ruling. CHRISTOPHER LYNCH A couple of regal visitors, Princess Margaret and her husband, the Earl of Snow- don, were treated to tribal dancing in Uganda Tuesday. are on a 10-day visit to that country. Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko was in Lon- don this week - discussing foreign policies with Mi- chael Stewart, his British JIM CLARK counterpart. Viet Nam was the main topic, but it bogged down quickly. Two Britons were charged under the Official Secrets Act this week, Frank Bros- sard, 53, a rockets expert, and Sydney Allan, 33, an army sergeant attached to the war office. She referred to the Bogart cult that is sweeping the United States and Can- ada: "Bogie would have been very amused." Second Language Desired, cY FOX MONTREAL (CP) -- Some want it early, some want it later--that was the gist of con- flicting views -expressed Mon- day about when Canadian chil- dren should begin learning a second language. A lean, impassioned professor of English from English-lan- pare McGill University in lontreal put the case for early lessons as he spoke during the being staged here by the royal commission on bilingualism and biculturalism. A delegation from La Cham- bre de Commerce de Sher- brooke, despite its thoroughly bilingual make-up, argued for a more cautious approach. The businessmen from Sher- brooke, 90 miles east of Mont- real, contended they spoke from experience. The Eastern Townships area, they said, is the "most bilingual region in Canada." SEES 'CONTAMINATION' But the bilingual babel pre- vailing in the area had resulted in a "contamination" of the French spoken there. Denis Tremblay, the cham- ber's chief spokesman on bicul- turalism, said the prevalence of "franglais," or anglicized French, in Sherbrooke proves that children should get a good grounding in their mother tongue before they take on a second language. Not so, said the McGill teacher, Dr. Brian Robinson. Directing his remarks mainly at the question of the learning of French by English-speaking children, Dr. Robinson said: "As of Grade 1, part of the school curriculum should be taught in French." Dr. Robinson heatedly dis- missed as unproved assertions that such a system would make the teaching of young children excessively awkward. He said appearances indicate this would be the case and many people claim their "com- mon sense" tells them so. Is FEASIBLE But for once common sense was wrong, experiments having established that early bilingual inst:uciuon is perfectly feasible. Another spokesman appear- ing before the 10-man panel was M. F. Anderson, president of the Montreal Board of Trade. Mr. Anderson said 'conscious discrimination" against French- speaking Canadians in business firms is still to be found in some cases '"'at less than the executive level." "It's difficult to weed it out," the head of the English-lan-/ guage trade group said. "It tends to be an area of substan-| | tial trouble, at least in the minds of some people." E. T. C. Burke, general man- ager of ithe Canadian Credit Men's Association, told the commission he fears that Eng- lish is tending to become the sole language for business in Canada. ; A. L. Irving, president of the association, said more business textbooks are needed so that French-speaking Canadians can learn to deal with contempo- rary business problems in terms supplied them by their own language. Pope Paul Raps Changes-Critics VATICAN CITY (AF)--Pope Paul said today critics of the reforms in Roman Catholic lit- urgy (worship) show a "certain spiritual laziness" and lack un- derstanding of the religious im- plications of the revisions. "Before it was enough to at- tend (a service)," the pontiff said. '"'Now it is necessary to participate "Before one could doze, and perhaps chat. He can no longer do this Now he must listen and pray.' Pope Paul's remarks consti- tute his strongest rebuke to crit- ics of the liturgical reform ef- fected by the Vatican ecumen- ical council.
