Vatican Council Meet Put Spotlight On Church Unity "Such a meeting as this would not have been possible a few years ago," the Rev. Msgr. Paul Dwyer observed, in con- eluding an address to the Osh- awa Ministerial Association. Father Dwyer spoke to the ministers of the city and dis- trict on his impressions of the third session of the Second Vati- can Ecumenical Council. which he had attended in Rome last year. Commentng briefly on the umerous Ecumenical Councils held since the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.), he described the latest one as the largest and most ecumenical of them all-- attended by over 2,000 bishops from all over the world, and representatives from several non Roman Catholic churches. The former councils had been concerned mainly with defining doctrines and dogmas, this council, the speaker noted, was tude towards non-Roman Cath- olic Christians. Describing an audience he had had with the late Pope John XXIII, while on a former visit to Rome, he spoke of how impressed he was with his ap- proachability and easy man- ner, "Perhaps we can't be one in all things for some time yet," he observed, "but there is, nonetheless, great scope for Roman Catholics and Protes- tants to work together in a spirit of friendship and unity, and. much encouraging evi- dence that we. are coming to- gether in many areas of Chris- tian witness and service." It was noted, at the meet- ing, that preliminary studies are planned for the holding of a Church and Industry Institute in Oshawa later this year, and also a Mental Health workshop for the clergy.
