Montgomery, Mrs. R. MacDonald and Miss Joyce Roberts, skip (holding trophy). Joyce Roberts Rink Captures GM Trophy By GEO. H. CAMPBELL They produced a brand new winner of the GM Trophy, in the Oshawa Curling Club's Ladies' Open Bonspiel, yester- day, when the Avonlea team, skipped by Miss Joyce Roberts, came through in the final rounds to cop the honors. The host club entry, skipped by "Gen" Miller, defeated Mer- lee Lawrence's Oshawa Golfig Club entry, 1964 trophy winners, in the quarter-finals, yesterday morning, but in turn, were elim- inated by Lee Scott's Scarbor- ough rink in the semi-final round. Mrs. J. Eiliott's Peter- borough rink went out in the other semi-final. bracket, when Miss Roberts won 10-2. The final match, for the big honors, saw "Lee" Scott's -rink fight back from an early deficit, and with only one end left, they "hugged" shot stone, to bid for a tie game, but Joyce Roberts made a calm and confident take-out with her final rock, for a big' six-end, which actually meant nothing to the score, but certainly clinched the major honors. the parade to the prize table. They missed out in the first, main event, but they were right rizes. Mrs. Hamley's rink from Peterborough cc, dropped their first game to "Lee" Scott and then marched undefeated, the rest of the way, to take the sec- ondary event, The F. N. Mc- yagi Trophy. They beat Mrs in the fina! game, 9-7, a splendid! final match that .was in doubt right up until the last two rocks. | REPEAT WINNERS Only repeat winners in the bonspiel were Mrs. D. Morgan's curlers from Peterborough Golf) and Curling Club. They won the| third event, Hallitt Trophy, in 1962 and again last year. They) took it for the third time last night, when they beat out "Jeanie" Adams in the semi- finals and won the final game) over Mrs. Alexander's rink from In the Fourth Event, Mrs. M. JOYCE ROBERTS, sister of Unionville's well-known Mur- ray Roberts, skipped her Avonlea entry to top honors, in the General Motors Trophy, annual Oshawa Oshawa Curling Club Ladies' Open bonspiel, here yesterday. "Lee" Scott of Scar- borough pushed the lone Oshawa survivor, "Gen" Miller's rink, into the discard, in a keen semi-final match and the Avonlea rink put out Mrs. J. Elliott's Liftlock City rink, in the other semi-final bracket. In the final, Roberts jumped into a big early lead but Scott fought back grimly and "com- ting home", it was still anybofly's game, until the final rock. Skip '"'Lee" Scott drew "'shot" with her last rock but skip Joyce Roberts didn't falter a bit and with the last rock of the end and game, she took out Scott's counter, to give her- self a big six-end, clinching the trophy and title, since a single was necessary. PETERBOROUGH rinks dominated yesterday's finals. Mrs. . J. Elliott's Liftlock City rink was ousted in the semi-final of the main event. There were three other entries from Peter- borough and they all paraded to the prize table. Mrs. K. Hamley's rink captured the secondary event, the Frank Mc- Callum Trophy; Mrs. D. Morgan's Liftlock City entry won the Hallitt Trophy for the second time in succession, third in four years and Mrs. M. McCartney's rink copped top honors in the "Fourth Event" -- major consolation session. Three of four Oshawa Club entries made it to the prize tables, all in the semi-finalist bracket. Mrs, '"'Gen" Miller's rink reached the semi-finals in the main event; Mrs. Eileen Coppin's rink In the third event and Mrs. Eileen Goulding's rink in the Fourth Event MANITOBA Remains as the only undefeated provincial eritry in the Canadian curling championships 'Brier' out at Saskatoon. Harold Worth's rink from Delisle, Sask., handed Northern Ontario their first defeat of the round-robin set, in 'the fifth round yesterday. This was N. Ontario's first loss and left them matched with Quebec, and Saskatchewan, with one loss apiece. Manitoba's skip Terry Braunstein had his yfirst "bad game" of the session, but still managed to defeat New Brunswick 10-7, At the halfway mark, with Manitoba unbeaten and three other teams boasting one-loss records, it would appear that Manitoba has the big edge and the best that can be expected, is perhaps a two-way tie for top honors.
