Bride Millers Parasite Can Bring Serious Troubles By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD Dear Dr. Molner: Suddenly I! found myself with diarrhea. My doctor said there were ameba, I followed through on a 21-day course of medicine, expecting that that would be all there was to it, but I have had two added courses since Will you tell me something about this parasite, or ameba, and can it be controlled? -- G.A.S. The ameba is a parasite that is too small to be seen with the naked eye but can be readily seen through a' microscope. A good deal of diarrhea is taken for granted,. and attri- buted to "something I ate,"' or "intestinal flu,"' In both such in- stances, it is a fairly brief epi- sode. (Allergy to certain foods is possible, too.) But when diarrhea continues, cause and amebiasis is a likely suspect, This is common in the tropics and can break out in epidemics in non-tropical areas, if food or water becomes con- taminated with the parasite. The ameba can take from three weeks to three months after exposure before it has multiplied in the intestinal tract. Then come dysentery or diarr- hea, not necessarily any. fever, but abdominal cramps and sometimes blood in the stool. The ameba can migrate to the liver and cause cysts. Some people harbor the para- site without themselves being sick--"carriers."' In some south- ern areas as many as 10 to 20 per cent of, the people have been found harboring the am- eba. They can contaminate wa- ter supplies, or food, through handling fruit and vegetables it is time to look for some other DONALD DUCK led i YOU USED TO PUT LOOSE CHANGE IN TO SAVE LP TO PAY YOUR | er pss aes LEan an Sr WHY, ISN'T THAT THE VASE | \ BROKEN? ik WITH A 1965 MODEL! NORTH a6 9A1084 o33 43109548 EAST @A1074 e-- @K10859 8762 @KQI982 @KQ763 oo AK The bidding: West 2¢ Pass Dble, Opening lead -- ace of. dia- monds. Here is an interesting hand reported by Dr. James Parrack in the British Bridge Magazine. As usual, the doctor casts his favorite character, Fred, in the role of hero. It seems that Fred, on this occasion, was playing in a team of four match and held the South hand. He was the dealer and opened with one spade. Now it is true that most players would have opened the bidding with two spades with Fred's hand, but Fred was not often inclined to do what most play- ers would do. West overcalled with two dia- monds and East jumped to five diamonds. This development did not faze Fred, who now bid five hearts in what can best be de- scribed as a forcing voice. North then came to life and raised the ante to six hearts, which West doubled violently after two passes, West led the ace of diamonds, Fred ruffed, of course, and played the king of hearts, East showing out. This complication, with West have all four missing trumps, might have upset a different declarer, but Fred, as usual, took the 4-0 break in stride. When he then cashed the ace of clubs and West dropped the queen on it, Fred's face lit up like a Christmas tree. Situations like this were always a source of great joy to him and he pro- ceeded to make the contract in his usual bang-bang style. He led the six of hearts and finessed the eight, and then, after ruffing the jack of dia- monds with the queen of hearts, led the seven and finessed the ten. When Fred now cashed the ace of hearts, he discarded the king of clubs on it, and he was then able to cash all of dum- my's clubs, which brought him to 12 tricks. : During the post-mortem, when Fred was asked why he had not tried to develop the spades in- stead of the clubs, he replied, 'What spades?" They were advertising an anti - Nazi play by Bertold Brecht, a production of Leeds University. Several persons be- came angry when they saw the uniforms and the three had to get a police escort. (Cooking destroys the.ameba; if a water supply is of doubtful safety, boiling be- fore drinking will protect one from amebiasis.) Treatment (courses of medi- cations which drive off the para- sites) is effective, but more than one course of medication may be required. Diarrhea is one of the prob- lems which threatens travellers. Typhoid - paratyphoid vaccina- tion will protect. against diarr- hea from the paratyphoid germ, which in turn are eaten without but there is no vaccination or other preventive for amebiasis other than avoiding the ameba. So, particularly in tropical areas, the wise traveller uses boiled or bottled water, and eats cooked rather than fresh fruits or vegetables in areas where the ameba is common.
