My parents agree that I can start smoking when I am 17 as long as I don't use cigar- ettes. Dad smokes cigars and thinks I should, too, as it causes little strain on the teeth, (I have very straight teeth). I would prefer a pipe. All my friends plan to be pipe-smokers because their fathers are. Which is better for health? Is it possible for a young man to feel sick after smoking a cigar or pipe for the first time? Are pine- and cigar-smoking habit forming?--J.A. That's a fine letter, but I'm not very happy about the idea of parents getting into such ponderous matters of policy- decision when their child is so young. Let's answer the questions in your last paragraph: 1. I don't know which is bet- ter for health, pipe or cigars, but either is better than cigar- ettes. 2, Sure, it's possible for young men, even those of 11 years, to smoke a cigar or pipe for the first itme and not get sick. I guess that's too bad. If every- body got sick the first time, not as many people would smoke. Too many parents (re- member I'm a parent, too!) have used this old wheeze with the idea that it would discour- age smoking. But if children, having been told this, try smok- ing anyway, and don't get sick, they forthwith decide that all advice they've had about smok- ing is wrong- cigar-smoking are habit form- ing. So are cigarettes, snuff and chewin AICTE MIHIOIGE BIL OlWaN AIBIAISI 7OILICIE ML OIBIEISI ATI BIONCMEE LE IISIAIL IRIEIUIN riRIA AS 10a was FIEIARIFWuiL) a6es mam river 22, 3.1416 23, Flower- in: . pe Yesterday's Answer 24.Foreigners 83.
