YY" GERAWA TIME, ¥ Wednesdey, January 20, 1965 DR. CLAUDE VIPOND Dr. Vipond Is Speaker -- A brief biography of Joseph Priestly, entitled, "Science, Politics and Religion", was read by Dr. C. H. Vipond to the members of the Oshawa Unitar- ian Fellowship. Said Dr. Vipond in part: "Born in England, in 1733, Priestly's earlier years were de- voted to a sound education in the liberal arts. After graduation he went into the Presbyterian min- istry, preaching the Unitarian doctrines. Between preaching and teaching, he conducted sci- entific experiments as a hobby. He began to investigate the chemistry of air, which led him to the discovery of oxygen, a discovery which gained him recognition as one of the most distinguished scientists of his day. "Because of his sympathy for both the American and French Revolutions, together with his religious beliefs, he was held in popular disfavor. His enemies used every means to make it appear that church and state were in danger and that the Unitarians were really seeking to overthrow church and king. These falsehoods caused a riot in Birmingham in which the church of which he was pastor was burned, his library sacked, manuscripts burned, his scien- tific apparatus broken up and his home burned. Because of this he went to America where he founded two Unitarian churches, one in Philadelphia and one in Northumberland. He died in 1804." Dr. Vipond continued: "Priestly had many admir- able qualities, knowledge, intel- ligence, curiosity and endurance and he provided leadership to other Unitarians of his day. While many disliked him, he was loved by scientists and statesmen. "One of Priestly's best assets was his '"'explorer's attitude'. Never content to accept conven- tional religious beliefs, Priestly devoted his life to searching for what, from his own experiences, he believed to be truth." Elect Club President Mart and Phreda Ostler were ) elected presidents of the Osh- awa Travel Trailer Club at the fourth annual meeting held at Woodview Community Centre. Assisting them for the ensuing year will be: Past Presidents Bill and Flo Kent; first vice- presidents, Garnet and Vera Johnstone; second vice-presi- dents, Ron and Betty Deeth: secretaries, Frank and Ferne Ball; treasurers, Dick and Win- nie Thorne and historians, Jelle and Glenna Bakker. Bev. McEwen assisted at the piano for the opening of. the meeting. , The 24 trailer families repre- sented were congratulated for attending on such a cold eve- ning. Minutes of the third an- nual meeting were read by Doc McEwen and the audited treas- urer's report was presented by Winnie Thorne in mimeograph- ed form. Bill Kent reviewed the high- lights of the trailer club year| mentioning the Kingston Rally) in June, the granting of the club charter, the club flag and crests and the dinner-dance. In order to determine club membership standing early in the year, a recommendation was presented that the fees must be received by the treas- urer no later than March 31 Card report was given by Win- nie Thorne for Harry and Pearl Blakely and Christmas greet- ings were read from old trailer friends, Hazel and Elmer Toms Wilda Brown added to the evening's program by showing colored slides of Maine and Canada's east coast.
