THE OSHAWA TIMBS, Monday, January 18, 1965 15° BRIDGE By B. JAY BECKER (Top record-holder in Mesters' Individual Championship Pley) FAMOUS HANDS South dealer, North-South vulnerable, Shes er vere ee JULIET JONES WE CAN'T DO THAT, SENATOR" THE PUBLIC WOULD REALIZE WE'RE A BUI IDIOTS -- AND THAT'S A TOP SECRET." J, EF EV'RYBODY res gered: 1S BLOWED UR, WON'T BE 'ROUND TO ELECT ME' NO MORES? @K7. @AKQI1043 &K6 'The bidding: 24 GENTLEMEN OF THE CANADIAN PACH MEET OUR NEW GENERAL MANAGER, WILLIAM VAN HORNE OF ILLINOIS - Martin Cohn, well known De- troit expert, tells this story about himself and quite a s it is. He had the South hand the bidding went as shown, If West had led a spade or a heart Cohn would have made the contract. But West, appar- ently recognizing what he was up against, decided to lead the nine of clubs. instead. This proved to. be an inspired lead for the defense when East took the club with the ace and re- turned the deuce of spades. Declarer played low, hoping against hope that East had the queen. However West showed up with the damsel and played the ace next. East played the three on the ace thus. blocking the suit so that West could not now cash his six spade tricks. This turned out to be a high- ly effective blocking play when West continued with a spade and East took the trick with the nine, East returned a heart trapping South's king and per- mitting West to cash his re- maining spades and five heart tricks as well. By this time twelve tricks had been played and the defense had won them all. Cohn was: already down seven--4000 points --with one trick to go. Perhaps the story should end - right here, but actually South's agony was not yet over. When West cashed his last heart Cohn still had to choose a dis- card. His two cards at this point were the king of clubs and ace of diamonds and he had to guess which one to discard, Unfortunately he decided te discard the king of clubs since he had no way of. knowing whether West's last card was a club or a diamond. West there-. upon cashed the queen of clubs and the outcome was that South went down eight -- 4,600 points He failed to take a trick despite his huge hand, ' Obviously Cohn misplayed the hand. He should have held the Joss to 4000 points NEWS IN BRIEF MAKES DRIVING TOUGH NAPANEE, Ont, (CP)--When - stopped by police, James Stuf- fles agreed his car did seem to be behaving oddly.
