(AP Wire- photo) Prisoners' Need Help Meet Told The John Howard Society's main problem is finding a re- leased prisoner a secure job -- and fast, according to Oshawa branch president Murray rkes. Addressing the second annual meeting of the branch Tuesday night in the Hotel Genosha. Mr. Sparkes said they must aid pris- oners "with dispatch'. Time, he said, was vital, par- ticularly in the first two to six weeks after release. If there is a delay in receiving help in this ge many men can't make it, said. Too many times, he said, the prisoner comes out to insecure, temporary jobs of short dura- tion which only heighten the difficulties of fitting back into society. "We often speak of the dis- couragement of the failing pris- oner," he said, "but this is secondary. The real discourage- ment comes from not being able to help fully, and with the speed required." Mr. Sparkes stressed the ter- ible factor of loneliness in the life of the released prisoner. Often he has to struggle for six months or more before he can begin to fit into society. During that time, he said, the ex- ames often is left largely on own. NEED HELP "The strain of loneliness," Sparkes said, "is hard enough for any man to bear let alone 'ene just out of jail." He said they often short- changed the prisoner asking for help because they were too busy. The Society must take the time, he said, for this was an impor- tant initial step. "Unless society is prepared to be more considerate towards the Teleased prisoner," he said, "problems will simply develop out of problems'. A. M. Kirkpatrick, executive director of the society in On- tario, told the meeting their main function is to provide the released prisoner with the op- portunity to rehabilitate. "Failure lies with the man himself," he said, "'for he is the one who fights the battle." Society however, he said, could make the battle a good deal easier on the released prisoner. This battle against the odds of a hostile and unaiding society is a punishment the law doesn't intend, he said. "The fact that the prisoner|. knows, even if he is returning to prison for a second time, that someone cared enough to help is often the turning point,"' he said. "and getting the aid there in time comes with experience and organization." Rev. Harry Meliow, of Osh- awa, treasurer, reported the Oshawa branch helped 23 cases in 1964, 16 of them financially.
