Only two of 43 passeners were PASSENGERS SAFE BUT SHAKEN Engine-Less Airliner Makes Safe Landing NEWHALL, Calif. (AP)--An airliner with 47 persons aboard made a safe landing in a plowed field Wednesday after, said one report, both engines quit. Two of 43 passengers on the United Air Lines Fresno-to-Los Angeles flight were reported shaken when the twin - engine Convair came down in the rain. Police had said earlier an elderly man suffered a stroke after the landing and was taken to hospital. The report that both engines quit came from the tower at Los Angeles International Air- rt, the plane's destination. he flight originated in' Reno, Nev., and there had been stops at San Francisco, Stockton and Modesto as well as Fresno, Calif. The pilot, Capt. Bill Wade of Los Angeles, "pancaked" the plane into a field muddy from recent rains, after the tail sur- face struck and snipped high tension wires. He was able to keep the nose up, despite uneven ground. Charles R. Hawks, chief of the Federal Aviation Agency's western aircraft engineering division, said the odds against two simultaneous engine fail- ures "are just astronomical." "I've never hard of it hap- pening before," he said. "And we need more facts to find out what happened here." New Ballot Or Nigerian Breakup -- Opposition LAGOS (CP)--The chief op- sition party which boycotted igeria's general election pressed a demand today for a new ballot or a conference to consider breaking up Africa's most populous nation. ~ A spokesman for the United Progressive Grand Alliance said if a "free and fair elec- tion" was not held, a proposal to break up the Nigerian feder- ation painlessly should be con-) sidered.
