12/ TH e \WA TIMES, Thursday, December 31, 1964 Pedestrians and Motorists Alike Must Stay Alert af All Times A NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE from CHIEF FLINTOFF! "It's hard to believe that one out of every four traffic deaths involves a pedest- rian, but the cold statistics are there to prove it,' Chief of Police H. W. Flintoff said today, reminding his fellow citizens that the holiday traffic accident threat was far from over.. "Pedestrians and motorists alike, must stay alert at all times, if they are to avoid becoming the victims or causes of fatal traffic accidents during the last day of the year," the Chief stressed. Here are some of the simple rules, devised by Chief H. W. Flintoff, to promote alertness and save lives during the long New Year's holiday: (1) Party-goers whose favorite drink is stronger than coffee should leave their cars in the garage. Their chances of being involved in an ident are minimized if they take a bus or taxi. A goodly percent of adult pedestrians killed during 1964 hed been drinking. In a large number of all fatal traffic accidents a drinking driver was involved. Re- member, you don't have to be intoxicated to be an unsafe driver. (3) Leaving one car window partly open will help you fight ness. (4) Even if they cross intersections on a green light, pedes- trians should make certain no cars are coming before they so much as step off the sidewalk, (5) Motorists should constantly have their eyes peeled and their reflexes prepared for children dashing out from behind parked cars. Slow driving will help you to give these youngsters a wide, safe berth. (6) One or two cups of strong coffee served at the end of the party will help those returning home by car or on foot to.stay on the alert. "Your local police force will be on duty to maintain law and order, but they can- not help you unless you first make some attempt to help yourself by observing these common-sense safety rules," Chief Flintoff concluded.
