MYERS, Ph.D. In spite of the upsurge in emphasis on phonics in an oc- casional classroom or whole school system, most children in the early grades get very little training in phonics. To arrive at this fact, just examine the primer, first and second read- ers used in most schools, and read the teachers' guide for this set. Surely almost all these early reading books are limited to a very small number of words, from 30 to a few hun- dred, each word being used over and over many times, The assumption is that, if the child repeats these few words often enough, he will learn to read them. The authors of the most widely used basic sets of read- ers have been leaders, some have been pioneers, in the look- and-say method. When some critic attacks this method and clamors for more emphasis on ally, reply with anger. Most of them insist that their system does include the teaching of phonics. True, they do include some, but the amount is very little; and a few of these read- ing experts advise "no phonics till the third grade."
