Each of the shots, the 20th and 2ist such tests to be announced this year, was described as of low yield with a blast force of less than 20,000 tons of TNT. FEWER IDLE IN U.K. LONDON (AP) -- Britain's number of unemployed dropped to 348,874 in December, lowest total for that month in seven years, the labor ministry said Thursday, The figure was 110, 000 less than the corresponding club values for us to hazard barred from bidding hearts, but in practice he usu- ally passes. 2. Pass. Here there is little prospect for a slam, and the only real problem to solve is whether there is likely to be a |better chance of making three notrump than four spades. A four spade bid would indicate merely a desire to play at four spades instead of three notrump. It would not suggest a slam. Both contracts can almost surely be made, but four spades is likely to go down more often than three notrump. For this reason the pass is apt to work out best in the long run. There is furthermore the practical con- sideration that partner, looking at an exceptionally good han may be tempted to bid again over four spades and that the ultimate 'contract in such case may fail. In addition, there is a possibility that partner has four aces and that the 1 int bo- nus for honors may be lost. 3. Six notrump. This raise is based on simple arithmetic. We are assured of at least 33 points in the combined hands, the num- ber that makes a slam under- taking mandatory. Of course, there is also a chance that the total will come to either 34 or 35 points. Certainly the hand is unimpressive standing by itself, but opposite a. three notrump bid it assumes much greater stature, Hands of this type illus- trate. the great value of point count. 4. Four notrumo, This is a raise in notrump and has noth- ing to do with Blackwood. We are not in good position to judge how many tricks are Hable to be made, since the outcome de- pends largely upon whether partner has the minimym or maximum values possible for his three notrump bid. There is no way for us to know whether the combined point count comes to 33, and the decision on how far to go is therefore left to partner.
