At first, however, Cathy didn't think of a career in skating. In fact, she was working in an of- fice when a skating champion saw her on the ice told her she was wasting her time behind a desk, He said she should be able to skate professionally. "As for me," Phil said, "I was brought up in Brooklyn, and I began skating for fun at 11. By 18, however, I decided I wanted to skate as a career, 80 I took odd jobs around the rinks to learn everything I could "T picked up a lot this way and eventually I auditioned for a job in a skating show. As a result, I got my career on ice, first as an understudy, then in a part, then in a solo and then with a partner." I asked. "Lots of good things happen," both Cathy and Phil agreed. "But the worst thing that can happen," Phil said, "is to have a costume rip on a performer-- especially the pants!" 'Instant' Room With A Wallpaper Border By ELEANOR ROSS In this, the era of instant cof- fee, TV dinners and other con- venience foods, h kers now have a new and pleasing adventure, "instant decorat- ing." "Se, as fast as one can wield a pair of scissors and saturate a sponge, it is now possible to create room settings of quality and charm. One wallpaper firm has intro- duced a new line, Fun With Borders, a collection of 51 dif- ferent wallpaper borders, plas- ticized for greater washability and pre-pasted for ease of hang- ing. Decorating problems can be solved, a snip at a time, with such borders as French Chef, Zoo Parade, Canopy, Floral and Fruit Swags, Formal Scroll and Americana--to name but a few. borders range from eight to 18 inches and each pattern is designed so that it can be trim- med to fit a specific area. There are literally hundreds of applications for these gay, new room accents. which come in a new-range of decorative colors such as empire green, burgundy, wedgewood blue plus a variety of delightful color combinations. + FRESH INSPIRATION Just looking at the line 1s enough to inspire fresh ideas for adding to a room's look, or changing it so deftly. We've been having fun using them as cutouts on "rec" room furniture, on cabinets, lamps Decorating The borders are ideal for out- ferent look to painted walls and for individualizing foyers and stairwells. Snip off enough to add a new dimension to screens, cornices or dormers. The jobs aren't difficult to handle. After border lengths are measured and the ends trimmed neatly with scissors, they may be easily applied after sub- merging in clean water for a few moments. Drain off excess water, position the pattern where it is to be applied, then brush flat with a smoothing brush or wet sponge. IN SHORT ORDER be done in short order. We like the scroll pattern since it lends itself to a variety of uses. The central portion of the design may be cut away and used alone to trim a room while the remainder of the bor- der, two leafy ribbons, can be adapted for a frame or dado. Formal artistry can be achieved by using segments of the same design separately. In one application we ad- mired, the centre of the scroll portion was using to give a ver- tical column effect. Then the leaf trim was used horizontally as an edging to separate wall from ceiling and to frame a mirror and sconces.
