SW igryee weertes way ot 1G THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, Decomber 7, 1964 'jages of two and four or five CHILD GUIDANCE With Speech By GARRY C. MYERS, Ph.D. 'Our eldest son, when around three or four years of age, re- ported to us one day that the workmen eating their lunch near our house drank something with 'hope' in it. He was re- ferring to the froth on the beer they drank. ' Like substitutes of "h" for "s" appeared in "hack of halt," "my little hister," 'Come and hee what I did." Substituting "w'? for "1, he would say, "I wove you." But such substitutions of sounds disappeared before he entered kindergarten. His mother would quietly and tend- erly say correctly some trouble- some words for him, summon- ing him to choose to repeat them after her. Also, we par- ents both selected some nursery rhymes and prose containing strategic words as we read daily to him. We enunciated these words with special care without telling him why. MIGHT DO HARM ers Similar harm to the child's speech might occur when you try to correct his wrong sounds of words after he enters school. One good thing you can safely do, whether the child is three or seven, whether he says sim- ple words with incorrect sounds, is to read aloud to him for brief periods daily. You must be caim and speak softly and kindly if you try to have him say a word correctly after you, else you do far more harm than good. Often an older brother or sis- ter or playmate can do most to help a child four, five or older grow, out of baby talk. If you don't see improvement after several weeks it might be well to consult a speech specialist. If your child begins to stutter, you should hesitate all the more to try and correct him directly, Your safest way is to act as if all is well and to put your em- phasis on helping him feel com- fortable when he speaks. have trouble with in words. She might make him very self-conscious about his speech. He might choose to speak less often. He might have all sorts of fears about speaking.
