28 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, November 30, 1964 Effort Against Sleeping Sickness Stepped Up Because Of Dam WINNIPEG (CP)--Partl: causé of construction - the South Saskatchewan River dam, Manitoba is stepping up its campaign against a variety of 'sleeping sickness known as western equine encephalitis. The reason, says a provin- cial health department report, | lies in the fear that the dam will provide an improved breeding ground for mosquitoes carrying the virus. The province has been study- ing the disease since 1941 when 521 persons contracted it and 79 died. But research has be-jlagged in recent years because the|the virus has rarely appeared. Last year, however, Saskat- chewan experienced an _out- break affecting horses and hu- mans. There were 163 cases reported among Manitoba horses in 1963 and another 79 this year, about 10 per cent of them fatal, although no humans were affected. The culex tarsalis, a type of mosquito, spreads the virus by biting first an infected bird, then a horse or human. The health department, work- ing with the University of Mani- -- the provincial agriculture department and the animal health branch of the federal agriculture department, has re- sumed duties on a '"'more ur- gent basis" to "determine if a resérvoir of infection exists in the province." COLLECT MOSQUITOES Blood samples were taken from 38 eight-month-old ducks hatched at the Delta Waterfowl Research Station at the south end of Lake Manitoba but no evidence of the disease was found, Mosquitoes were also col- lected for tests. They have been sent to Manitoba's virus laboratory where attempts are being made to grow the virus Blood samples will be taken from any horse suspected of having been exposed to the dis- ease and specimens will be (taken from fowl and other farm stock delivered to abattoirs. The health department says the projects should lead to a better understanding of | the transmission of the disease and "could result in preventive con- trol measures." Western equine encephalitis, which causes inflammation of the brain, is largely a summer disease. The first fall frost halts its spread. Eating a duck that has the disease cannot cause the sleeping sickness. Alberta entomologists and public health officials have also begun a_ long-term research) 514 project. They say there is some indication that poultry on irri- gated farmlands in southern Alberta are carrying the virus with increasing frequency, the explanation being that irriga- tion has created more breeding grounds for the mosquitoes. VATICAN CITY (AP)--Pope Paul said Sunday he prayed that the people of India will un- derstand his trip to Bombay Wednesday as a sign of brother- hood, esteem and honor. The Roman Catholic pontiff's words seemed to reflect his re- gret and concern about opposi- tion to his Indian trip by some sere which have pro- pos is coming and threat- ened demonstrations. But his words showed clearly that opposition has not altered his conviction that his visit to India will serve the interests of unity among Christians and fra- Pope Prays For Understanding jbishop of ternity with non-Christians to which much of the Vatican ecu- menical council has been de- voted. Hindu extremist groups began their protests immediately after the Pope announced on Oct. 18 that he would attend the inter- national eucharistic congress in Bombay--that he would "go as a missionary." As opposition mounted and|¢}) signs of "Pope go home" began to appear in the streets, Valer- ian Cardinal Gracias, Arch- Bombay, made changes in the program for the papal visit.
