Women took the place of men in the plants giving Cana- dian 'women a _ big" 'Push | in Historic Skyline PARIS (Reuters)--New steps to preserve the historic skyline of Paris have been taken by Culture Minister Andre Mal- raux, Under a new decree, new building and demolition of ex- isting buildings in the centre of the city will first have to be approved by a special archi- tectural committee. The decree extends protection to the banks of the Seine and includes Place de la Concorde, Quai d'Orsay, Place de la Re- publique, Boulevard St. Michel and Boulevard du Temple. Most of the famous Latin quarter, the shopping area of Rue de Rivoli, and the two is- lands in the middle of the Seine, He de la Cite and Tle St Louis, are also guarded against a skyscraper invasion. Another decree issued by the in Canada. By ANNE MASON EDMONTON (CP) -- Re- sourcefulness and a yen for ad- venture are assets for a woman in an overwhelmingly male field, says geologist Alice V. Payne. The attractive 24 - year - old blonde, the only woman geolo- gist in any Northwest Territor- ies mining camp last summer, says "the men were amazed to see @ woman in the bush." Miss Payne, taking her master of science degree in the geology of hard rocks at the University of Alberta, Edmon- ton, was in Yellowknife doing field work for her thesis when she had an opportunity to go farther north. She took her pick, packsack and bedroll and hitched a ride in a bush plane to Coronation Gulf, 75 miles within the Arctic Circle, where a mining syndi- cate was doing exploration work for gold. "The men -- 14 geologists-- promised I'd be treated ust like any other geologist." But they gave her a special tent with a cot, straw mattress, a stove and three oil drums 'lin one large tent with bunk beds and a stove. "And the prospectors did all the cooking -- it was really good." LIKES FIELD WORK She spent a week in the Arctic camp, 975 miles north of Ed- monton, collecting about 150 pounds of rock samples for fur- ther study here this winter. She also did reconnaissance work Attractive Blonde Geologist Braves Mining Camps In N.W.T. ied rock formations and conti- nental drift. A geologist's basic equipment is a pick, a compass, a label- ling pencil and sometimes a canoe. Miss Payne pon she usually wears tough pants, a heavy wool shirt and waier- proof field boots for the muskeg, insulated if possible with heavy socks. The tall, blue-eyed blonde says she prefers field work to being in the laboratory and likes a'job that can take her "anywhere any time and under practically any conditions." She worked for the department of mines and technical surveys in Ottawa for a year. She says it is often hard for a woman geologist to find work, as mining companies usually will not hire them. "Women can't go underground due to miners' superstitions." "If a woman wants to con- tinue in geology, she must be prepared to butk opposition and to accept the public's mental image of a rugged, tough woman who outdoes the men." Miss Payne enjoys riding and owns three horses. She also loves to curl, ski and play the piano, SHARE AMBITIONS She attributes her interest in rocks to her family being drenched in the geology and oil business, Her father prospected in the north during the 1920s and °30s and the family has spent many summers in Yel- lowknife, where her father's partnership has a 40-per-cent interest in a mine owned by Consolidated Mining and Smelt- with other geologists and stud- ing Company. their campaign for equality. At the end of the war 1,046,- 000 women held jobs, apart from 46,315 in the services and 800,000 on the farms, out of a total of 5,600,000 females (CP Photo) municipal council places any project for new construction on Montmartre -Hill under stricter control of the local authorities. The area concerned is particu- larly favored by tourists. Paris- ians call it '"'La Butte Sacree"' (The Holy Hill) because it was the site of martyrdom in the days of Roman Gaul. The ministry of culture has also taken under its wing the site of Versailles, former home} of Louis XIV. A decree brings under ministry control any con- struction projects within a rad- ius of about three miles of the king's bedchamber in the pal- ace of Versailles.
