MOLNER, MD Dear Dr, Molner: Does a Spur occur only on the heel? Could too much or too little of something in the diet cause it? --Mrs: HM. Dear Doctor: Is there a cure for spurs in the heels? They are very painful: I have been taking ultrasonic treatments: which do not seem to help. I have them in both heels and they seem to be on the bone right where I walk.--BMW. Such spurs can occur in ten- dons elsewhere--but they aren't where you full weight comes them. Spurs On The Heel Can Be Relived % presses on it, The same pebble would not matter much in a glove. Diet has nothing to do with formation of spurs. Rather, the calcification (think of it as an accumulation of scar | tissue; that is what it is) forms be- cause the tendon has been dam- aged in some way. The healing results in this lumpy hardness. Repeated pressure can cause it, or injury (such as jumping and landing with your weight on the heel) or infection. Bursitis is an example of the latter. Depending on the precise lo- cation and size, some spurs are painful, others are not. Careful cushioning of the foot, with an innersole placed sq as to take pressure off the painful spot, is in general the best solution. JAY BECKER (Top record-holder in Masters' Individual Championship Play) - West dealer, -- North-South erable, 1105 542 The bidding: West North East South Pass Pess 16 39 Pass 5% Passe 6@ Open Jead--four of: spades. Bad_ bidding will sometimes produce good results, but that is scarcely a g reason for indulging in bad bids. Here is a case where bad bid- ding paid off well. The deal oc- curred in a team of four match and the North-South pair were well behind at the point when this hand came up. South had all the values nec- essary for his three heart bid, but North, in an effort to gain a swing, overbid his hand some- what by jumping to five hearts. South carried on to six and West led a spade. East took the ten with the ace and was faced with a prob- lem of what to return. His pos- sible choices were a spade, a diamond or a club. After much thought he returned a spade, which declarer ruffed, and the outcome was that South made the slam. East could, not be sure of the best. return to make, but it does seem that his selection of a spade was the worst choice. It was far more likely that South, who had undertaken the slam in the face of a spade bid by , East, would have the singleton ~ - spade than West, Viewed differently, there was also a much greater chance on the bidding that South had two aces and West one, than there was that South had started with two spade losers. If East had viewed the mat- ter in this light, he would still have had to guess whether to play a diamond or a club at trick two. Only a club return would have defeated the con- tract. In general, in such situations, the better play is to return the side suit in which declarer is apt to have less cards. In the present case, this would have indicated a club return. There is a good reason for favoring the return of declarer's shorter suit. If declarer is miss- ing the ace of his longer suit, he may not be able to rd the entire suit on dummy's win- ners. DONS COMPLAIN OXFORD, England (CP)--Ox- ford University dons say they lack facilities for scholarly re- search, especially compared with their U.S. counterparts. A memorandum by two leading scholars suggests the univer: sity should ease the pressure of their teaching commitments to allow more time for scholarship on a "sabbatical" basis and provide funds for travel and re- search work.
