JACKIE PARKER helped his teammate Dick Shatto to set a new All-Canadian touch- down record, in yesterday's game at Toronto CNE Stad- ium, where the Argos whip- ped Montreal Alouettes 30-10. The Toronto starry halfback is shown here with the battle, as he skids to a halt, in "'pay- dirt territory." This was Shatto's third touchdown of the game and it was Parker's passes that enabled Shatto to pass Parker's old record. The old mark of 87 touchdowns ARGOS STILL ALIVE for a career total was held by Jackie Parker. Shatto's three TD trips yesterday gave him a career total of. 89. Behind Parker, in the above picture, are shown Montreal's Ed Learn (17) and Billy Ray Locklin (58). -.. STAMPS BOMB SASK. Fleming, in his sixth year with Lions after coming from the University of Iowa, had been having a spotty season. But hardly a hand was laid on him Saturday night at Ed- monton as he ran 109 yards be- fore 12,000 fans for a_touch- down to set a Western Football Conference record and tie a Ca- nadian Football League mark. Fleming, who seems to be able to gear his 183 pounds to whatever speed is necessary, raced for another touchdown as British Columbia beat Edmon- ton Eskimos 24-14 Saturday night. Eskimos got touchdowns from flanker Jim Thomas and full- back Bill Tobin. Both were con- verted by centre Bill Mitchell. At Calgary, flanker Bobby Taylor caught passes for three touchdowns, Lovell Coleman scored two touchdowns and quarterback Eagle Day counted the other touchdown, Place- kicker Larry Robinson, the WFC's leading scorer, got the other six Stasmpeder points on four converts and two singles. KAPP ALSO SCORES Fleming got his.second touch- down after taking a short pass from quarterback Joe Kapp in a play covering 59 yards. Kapp scored the other B.C. touch- down. Hamilton TigerCats are fi- nally looking like defending Grey Cup champions and Dick Shatto of Toronto Argonauts is making a strong bid to retain his conference scoring cham- pionship. The Tiger Cats virtually sewed up the EFC lead Satur- day, walloping Ottawa Rough Riders 34-16 to break a dead- lock for first place, The Ticats now hold a two- point lead over the Riders and a w-l lead in games between the clubs. Both the clubs meet third-place Montreal Alouettes and the -cellar-dwelling Argos once and one win would assure Hamilton first place and a bye into the conference playoff fi- nals. Shatto charged into touch- down territory three times Sun- day, leading the Argos to a 31-10 victory of the Alouettes. The euper effort clinched an all- time record in the Canadian Football League of 89 touch- downs for the veteran halfback. The previous record was 87 - held by Toronto quarterback Jackie Parker. Shatto also brought his sea- son points total to 66 to come within 13 points of EFC scor- ing leader Don Sutherin of Hamilton, Sutherin, however, was doing some record setting against the Rough Riders. Sat- urday, kicking his 18th field goal of the season to surpass the former season mark of 12 heid by Ottawa's Moe Racine, Quarterback Bernie Faloney of Hamilton marshalled his air attack for 235 yards, charged over for two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes to Tommy Grant. Sutherin, while setting his field goal record, also kicked four converts and three singles. Russ Jackson and Ron Stew- art got the Ottawa touchdowns and Racine booted a field goal and one convert. The Ticats, playing with the precision of defending champi- ons, scored a touchdown on the opening series of plays. They led 9-0 after the first quarter, 20-6 at the half and 34-9 after the third quarter. Stewart and Jackson com- bined for a brief glimpse of brilliance in the second quar- ter, Stewart ran left and wheeled for a pass to Jackson who raced 30 yards for a touch- down. Ottawa gained 83 yards in the air as Jackson, experiencing one of his poorest days, com- pleted only four of 14 pass at- tempts for 50 yards. Ottawa out- rushed the Ticats 191 to 171, CLOSE ON ALS The Toronto win brought the Argos to within two points of Montreal and kept them in con- tention for the third and final playoff spot. Parker was the king pin in the Toronto win, completing 14 of 17 passes for 182 yards during the first half while the Argo defensive front line threw up a pass umbrella against Montreal quarterback George Bork that yielded no yardage. Lineman John Vilunas also got a Toronto touchdown and Karl Sweetan converted three and added a field goal. Dave Mann scored the other Toronto point, a 65-yard single. Ted Elsby scored Montreal's lone touchdown on a_ blocked Toronto punt. Willie Lambert converted and Gino Berretta kicked a single, The Als also counted a safety touch when Mann was nailed in the end zone on a punt attempt after a poor snap. Sweetan took over as quarter- back from Parker in the fourth quarter and connected on two of six tries for 12 yards. Par- ker's record was 22 passes com- pleted in 36 attempts. Toronto had 30 first downs to Montreal's seven, outrushed the Als 1869 yards to 118 and gained 306 yards in the air against a 28 by the Montreal club, FOOTBALL SCORES, STANDINGS By THE CANADIAN PRESS | Saturday's Resslts | Canadian Lea) as ewan 0 Calgary Eastern chaamene British Columbia 24 Edmonton he ae 4 SATURDAY American League Houston 21 New York 24 United League Quebec 31 Joliet 3 Toledo 7 Charleston 21 SUNDAY National League Philadelphia 23 New York 17 Washington 24 St. Louis 38 Green Bay 21 Baltimore 24 Detroit 10 Chicago 0 Cleveland 20 Dallas 16 Pittsburgh 10 Minnesota 30 San Francisco 14 Los Angeles 42 American League ; aie Buffalo 35 Kansas City 22 His record in Bombers' first Denver 14 San Diego 42 10 games indicates he does be- United League long and, in fact, puts him in Canton 21 Indianapolis 6......|the race for WFC rookie-of-the- Grand Rapids 23 Wheeling 20 | year honors, an H int i Hamilton Ottawa Montreal Toronto Saturday's Result Hamilton 34 Ottawa 16 Sunday's Result Montreal i Tsronto 31 Saturday's Game Toronto at Hamilton Sunday's Game Ottawa at Montreal Western og ag if B.C.
