10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, October 14, 196% TIED FOR FIRST Generals Triumph Over Canadiens 2-l By GERRY SUTTON Oshawa Generals made a suc- cessful home debut at the Bow- manville Arena last night, edg- ing Montreal Junior Canadiens 2-1 in a close-checking contest. The win boosted Generals in a first place tie with Toronto Marlboros in the OHA Junior A League. Both teams have four points, have a game in hand. Niagara Falls three points. We are not suggesting that this comes as the result of a long, hard climb, nor even that it is a situa- tion that will continue for any more than this week -- but the fact that they are up at the top now does indicate that they have the potential to be "in-or-around" that first-place' slot, several times during the coming campaign and should have more than a little to say about who wins the OHA Junior "A" title. Coach Jim Cherry, one of those ambitious types who is never completely satisfied, has to be fairly happy about his first three games. Generals pulled a 3-3 tie out of Niag- ara Falls and they went down in Montreal on Sunday night and snatched a 3-3 tie again. Then last night, in Bowman- ville, they came up with a 2-1 win in their 'home opener". This gives them a total of four points same as Marl- boros -- who have their four points, however, on the strength of two victories. But to-date, the Generals are undefeated and what's more they've achieved something that a lot of the teams will not likely do very often this season -- gain a split in points, in games played in Niagara Falls and in Montreal. By the way; their next outing is in St. Kitts on Sunday. Bow- manville Arena had a near-capacity house' last night for the opening game, which saw Oshawa's Matt Leyden, Ist vice- president of the OHA, drop the puck to officially open the season, x x x x BROOKLIN CONCRETES captured the All-Ontario Inter- mediate "C" softball championship over the weekend and the series, . which went the limit, was about as thrilling as will ever be witnessed. Bob Campbell struck out 19 batters in the first game and still lost the decision -- a couple of unearned runs giving Capreol a 2-1 verdict. Ezio Bevilacqua got his turn at the "no justice" treatment in the second game when he struck out 17 batters (he fanned 16 in the first game, Saturday night) and he allowed only two hits, but he lost 3-1, because the two hits were both homers. In the .third game, Campbell came back with 13 strikeouts to win the deciding game 4-2. He had a total of 35 strikeouts for 20 innings -- doing a great piece of relief work to protect the lead in the second game, after Ron Jones was hit on the pitching arm. Bevilacqua, who pitched all three games for Capreol, also fanned 13, but this time the Brooklin boys bunched their hits, to richly earn the title. It was a great day for Brooklin softball fans, It mark- ed their first OASA title since they won the "C" crown back in 1955, although many -of the players were with the Mount Zion team which won the OASA "D" honors in 1960-61-62. Capreol had won the Inter, "'C" championship five times since 1957, Including last season. The triumph climaxed a great season, not just for the stars, such as the Jones boys, Camp- bell, Till, Ferguson brothers, Warriner, Hill, but was of special significance to such veterans as the Mit- chell brothers, Don and Bruce, "Turk" Cornish, Bob Petch and, of course, coach "Dib" Little. It catatyo be pointed out that the Brooklin team upheld the prestige of the Oshawa City and District Softball Association also.
