Play: ers too battered or sore to go helping amateur football. George Coroneos, assistant general of the West- ern Football Conference club, i unique on a small per years this year, as the team's list of disabled grew alarmingly long, so did the amateur football as- sistance program. The result is that the ama- teurs are benefitting from the miseries of the last-place pro team. Coroneos, a native of Nor- walk, Conn., discussed the pro- gram while 'it was, in full swing --with seven Bombers on the sidelines. The idea is simply to 'help the kids," he said, suggesting that the Bombers are not par- ticularly hopeful of ending up with a o, array of native talent as result of the pro- gram. The gap between amateur and professional football in Canada has widened in the last two years, and it's becoming increasingly difficult for a boy to. take the step 'into the pro game unless he has exceptional ability PLAYERS ROTATE The way the assistance pro- gram operates is to have the disabled players rotate, visiting different schools. and football clubs, teaching their specialty. One such teacher was quar- terback - linebacker Brian Palmer, 24, who played high school and junior football here himself before becoming a pro. Another was Steve Patrick, Brantford Bisons Enter Jr. Finals BRANTFORD (CP) Brant- ford Bisons defeated Sarnia Knights 12-6 Wednesday night to advance to the Ontario Rugby Football Union junior finals. The instruction is a continu- ing operation, with at least some of the injured players available at all times. It may offer little comfort to coach Grant, struggling ith replacements and trying to rebuild a once-great team into a contender, but there's at least some satisfaction in knowing the club is reaping good will.
