18 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesdoy, September 30, 1964 CASEY STENGEL will be still with the N.Y. Mets next year. He is shown here (left) with President George Weiss yesterday, after of the Mets, as they posed in the team's office in New York announce- ment that Stengel would again SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' SCUGOG CLEANERS Junior Softball Club captured the 1964 "City Championship" softball crown, last night at Alex- andra Park, when they nosed out Bad Boy's Appliance squad 4-3, for their third-straight win in the final series. The win climaxed the Oshawa City and District Softball Association's season in fine style. The iocal softball teams in the C and D circuit didn't exactly cover themselves with glory, in their respective OASA playoff competitions this season, but just the same, they:all enjoyed another good season. The victory for Scugog Cleaners marked the first time the Junior team has copped the City Championship crown, since another Scu- gog Cleaners team achieved the feat, back in 1959, or was it 1958. That year the Scugogs won the South Ontario League championship, a grouping that included all the local softball teams, except the Senior "A" Tony's. Technically, the "City Championship" series is not quite just that -- since the Tony's team doesn't not compete in the City and District com- petition. Last night's game just about wraps up the local softball season. Brooklin Concretes are competing for the Ontario Intermediate "'C" title -- with the first game of the Southern Ontario finals, against Elmvale, carded for this evening in Brooklin. Oshawa Tony's go tonight at St. Thomas in the second game of their Senior "A" series and the Oshawa team has to win this one, to force a third game. Only other softball championship still to be decided is in the Oshawa Minor, Assoc. Midget League. That: 3-out-of-5 final series opens tonight, at Storie Park with the second game scheduled for Sunday afternoon, at Connaught Park, 3:00 o'clock. Re- maining games will be played at Alexandra Park, starting on Monday night, at 6:30 o'clock. x x x x ST. LOUIS Cardinals moved into first place in the National League pennant race yesterday when they defeated the Phillies 4-2. Two weeks ago, the Phils were starting to sell tickets for the World Series, boasting a six-game lead at that time, but now they are trailing and the slump which has seen them lose seven-straight games, has dropped them almost out of the running. Pittsburgh Pirates, thanks to Bob Friend, blanked the Cincy Redlegs 2-0 yesterday, which keeps the Phils still in the running and also puts Cardinals, along with the Redlegs, in a last-week fight for the pennant and a berth in the World Series. The Giants also have a chance s0 every game in this final week of the schedule, will be a sizzler. It's next to impossible to pick the winner at this point but it wouldn't be a surprise to anybody if they finish up with a tie for first place and have to have a special playoff game to decide the National League winner. Chicago White Sox won a 2-1 verdict over Dean Chance and the Angels yesterday, to keep their American League pennant hopes alive. Yankees were rained out. A couple of twin-bills, today and tomorrow, will see the American League winner decided before the end of the week. Barring a complete collapse, the Yankees appear to be "'in'. x x x x HOCKEY TONIGHT +1 Oshawa-Generais;-with-less--than-a-- week of training under their belts, move into exhibition action tonight at the Bowmanville Arena, in the first half of a home- and-home session with Toronto Marlboros, the 1964 Memorial Cup champions. Marlies have about eight of their Canadian championship team back with them this year, along with some top talent recruited from their Junior "B'" "farm teams', among whom is Paul Laurent, son of Bobby Laurent, who tofled with the Marlies, back in the late 30's.' Oshawa hockey fans, still remembering the fine showing made by the Gen- erals last winter, are looking forward to the 1964-65 campaign and no doubt there'll be a big crowd at Bowmanville Arena tonight, to watch the Generals do battle with the Marlies.
