Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' CONGRATULATIONS ! Oshawa sports fans must stand at attention today and salute the prowess of the Oshawa Green Gaels Junior Lacrosse Club. They have won The Minto Cup, entblematic of the Canadian Junior lacrosse championship, for the second year in succession. The drain on private spon- sorship is beginning to be felt and some eyebrows are being raised -- is it worth it? Since the Green Gaels are our Cana- dian Junior Lacrosse Champions -- two years in succession -- we have to go along with the price being worth it, Until the CLA changes its rules, there can be no criticism of either "The East" or "The West" in the final bid for gonfalon hon- ors. But it becomes more-and-more apparent, this is not a contest between the best team in the East vs the best team in the West, but rather, the best in the East vs the best in the West. Maybe they have to do it this way, to guarantee gate receipts in the final series. 'Certainly, we are convinced that Jim Bishop's "Green Gaels", restricted to their own gigned club members, are the best team in Canada's Junior lacrosse picture today. We think Bishop has done a great thing for lacrosse in Oshawa. We stop right there -- because if Oshawa continues to dominate the OLA -- then the num- ber of entries will dwindle and instead of building the game-- the game, as per number of entries, will dwindle. OLA and OLA officials appear content to go along with this business "bolstering" teams. It's not needed -- and shouldn't be! A special rule, to cover injuries, college education moves, etc., would be in order -- but to make it a wholesome choice of the best in the East vs the best in the West, this is not true competition. If you think it is -- then there should only be one team in each area -- right from the start. We have nothing but praise for the Oshawa Green Gaels and for their hard-working executive. They've played the game, according to the rules -- and proved to be the best. The replacements are without doubt, all "great guys'? -- but we are just old- fashioned enough to stick to the old idea -- if Oshawa wins a berth in the finals then Oshawa's players should play the final series. Picking up the best in Hastings, Brampton, St. Catharines, etc., is merely making our own Green Gaels an "all-Star Eastern Team'? -- and we don't think they needed this help -- as long as the West was also limited to their own players. « ' x x x x THE MANN CUP finals are all tied up! Vancouver Carlings defeated Brooklin Merchants 13-12 last night in Whitby, with the winning goal coming in the final 12 seconds of play. That win evens the series at three wins apiece and sets the stage for an all-out battle for the title, tomorrow night, You need a shoe-horn to get into the Whitby Arena to see these Canadian senior lacrosse final games and we can only guess at how many will be turned away tomorrow night, when they go in the deciding 7th game... . CIVIL SERVICE Softball League playoffs are not going to wait unti] next Monday night. The second game of the champion- ship series has been arranged for tonight, at Whitby Com- munity Park. Wood's Transport must win over Thompson's Plumbing -- or there's no tomorrow! © Indians' Pres.
