WEIGHT AND PULL TIVE OOTIAWA 'TIMED, Weanesday, Beptemser 10, TYE |y Proper Bow For Archery - By KEN ROBERTS As mentioned in last week's article, we will look at Archery equipment this week. In the gp the archer, the bow the mo}t prominent piece of equipment. For a bow, incor- rectly matched to a would-be archer, cak discourage this chap to the point of giving up the sport. Bow hunting or target work can be accomplished if a person will only give himself half a chance and the time to learn. START EASY Now on the outset, if you have never used a bow and arrow be- fore, start with a light bow, pre- ferably about 30 Ibs. Regardless of the fact that you can hoist a barbell or do so many push-ups, ede be using muscles you ven't co-ordinated before. You may say, "Oh Heavens, I can use a. 50-pounder with ease". True, you may be able to draw a 50-lb. bow with ease once, but how about 144 times. Yes, 144 times, that is the num- ber one is required to shoot in some competition courses. - In theory, you should be able to fire 36 arrows, the first hav- ing Same accuracy as the jJast. If you can you are ready for a 50-lb. bow. « So pick a light bow and prac- fice. Soon you will bring into play these muscles and they will rform in unison, giving you a mooth form. The light bow you bought will begin to seem a tmere toy. Then and only then should you move into a heavier class. In the 'selection of your hunting bow follow these rules-- fire 30 to 40 arrows; if your grouping is OK, try to hold the bow at full pull (usually 28"), for five or six seconds. If you can accooompllish this, this is the c' for you. iG BOWS Hunti bows differ slightly from { t bows, they are Important Beginner \ shorter and usually of a re- curve construction. The short length enables the archer to manoeuvre quickly in tight spots and in heavy brush. This short length and heavy pull often found in hunting bows (50 - 80 Ibs.) is accomplished through the curve method of construction, That is, the bow ends have an outward bow which adds more pound pull to the bow for a given weight and length. A- good course your target bow. These are usually straight or semi- recurve bows, here length is not a factor, nor is weight. This type bow is cheaper to produce and buy. Some people, if money is no problem, buy both a hunting bow and a target bow. The tar- get bow is usually from 30 to 48 Ibs., while the hunting bow is from 50 to 80 Ibs. Some archers advocate using a hunting bow that is out of their pound-pull class. They base this on the theory that they only pull it, maybe, four or five times a hunting trip. But, if this is the case, how about accuracy. Don't fall into this pit and leave wounded game in your path. Get your bow, know its limitations and use it accordingly. In your choice of bows, you will come up against the in- expensive, solid fibreglass bows. These are fine and range in price from 15 to 25 dollars. How- ever, when you go higher, say to a 60 to 70-Ib. bow, the cast is a solid glass bow which has a little to be desired, and I would advocate the use of some of the better wooden laminated bows. But, if price is important, stay under 50 oF 55 Ibs. in a solid bow. This should serve as both hunting and target bow to the average archer. Airline distance was 210 miles, Nine lofts com- peted with 100 entries. Shewchuk's bird captured the three 200-mile scheduled races, which is quite a feat for a young bird -- three weeks straight without a rest. Following are the results in yards-per-minutes -- J.
