Everything glows with color. ie The past and the present as well as the far-away places are happily met in the new home furnishings that in all are very much of the 20th century and international in inspiration. Even that constant favorite, Early American furniture, has acquired a crisp continental tone, . derived from European cultural elements. Contemporary furniture matches Early American in popularity and 'strength and here again designs come from all over the globe. NEW HIGH REACHED This go-with-anything move- ment reaches a new _ high plateau of taste and comfort. It is brimming over with innova- tions and conforms easily with today's room size and living areas. Borrowing from styles present or past, contemporary furniture 'is ever-changing yet suitable to the moods. of the moment. An important trend, and one that is coming up fast, is the re-emergence of Modern, in all its. pristine clarity of line and form. Safety First Underscores Bath Decor Much attention and emphasis are on beauty and convenience in today's bathroom, which is as it should be. But we are reminded that no factor is more important than its safety. For safety's sake, every bathroom should have a grab-bar placed strategically on the wall above the bathtub. Be sure that the grab-bar is firmly secureed. It should be attached to the wall studing, not merely to the tile or plaster. Never, never, use plumbing or heating pipes as a ground for electric wires--such a prac- tice is doubly dangerous. Not only does it expose the family to severe shocks when the pip- ing is disconnected for repairs, but the current causes corro- sion in the piping and connected tanks. This practice is not too un- common, unfortunately. And now for a warning on another practice that is all too common--the placing and use of electrical appliances near the bathtub where they may be touched or where they may ac- tually fall into the water. A modern medicine cabinet should be used for the storage of medicine and toxics, out of the reach of children's prying hands. Some medicine cabinet manu- facturers have taken a real stride in safety and have equipped their cabinets with an inner compartment opened only by a key or a button hidden from view atop the chest. Mrs. Carlin, who teaches high school in suburban Verdun, at- tended a Carleton University seminar in Ottawa on the use of the newspaper in the class- room. She came away firmly be- lieving that the newspaper is a more effective instrument of teaching than most texts, and last year she used it for a class of 20 pupils 14 to 17 years old with learning prob- lems Her pupils said newspaper reading and interpretation in- creased their comprehension and vocabulary, gave them more initiative and confidence and made them more interested in the world. Mrs. Carlin calls the. newspa- per "living history" and says datelines from all over the world make it a good geogra- phy aid. She also uses it in mathematics, basing problems on sale and regular prices in advertisements. And it helps in social science subjects and gui- dance. For example,it became easier to teach the importance of "clean appearance" and "courtesy" when they are stipu- lated as requisites for employ- ment in help-wanted ads. Mrs., Carlin says her stu- dents never showed any pre- vious interest in politics before using the newspaper, but after- wards wanted to take a trip to Ottawa.
