Canada Sells More Wheat Behind Curtain OTTAWA (CP) -- The Cana» dian Wheat Board has sold 7,400,000 bushels of wheat to Po- land and about 1,800,000 bush- els to Bulgaria, Trade Minister Sharp informed the Commons Thursday. Mr. Sharp said the shipments to Poland will be made between August and November this year, and those to Bulgaria' between August and October. Both sales were covered by contracts signed under three-year wheat agreements signed last year. The sale to Poland was. the third under the Nov. 5, 1963, agreement calling on Poland to take 'a total of 44,000,000 bush- els, with 14,700,000 bushels in the first year. Still Aim To Debate Senators' Age Limit The retirement proposal, in the resolution stage on the Com- mons order paper since May 19, would require senators ap- pointed after passage of the leg- islation to retire at age 75 on pension. Those who are sena- tors now could remain in the Senate for life or retire at age 75 or afterwards on an annuity. REFORM IS BASIC Senate reform is a_ basic plank in the platform of all par- ties in the Commons, with the New Democrats through their predecessor party, the CCF, pledged to its abolition. These arguments are bound to be revived when the Senate retirement debate starts in the Commons sometime this au- tumn. Except for some of the more radical reformers in the oppo- sition, however, the cry isn't likely to be "End 'em, don't mend 'em"--a slogan developed by the Labor party in the United Kingdom in an effort to reform the hereditary House of Lords out of existence, Experience of both Conserva- tive and Liberal governments has been that the Senate can play a big role through its com- mittees, particularly its impor- tant banking id commierce committee, in the fine points of legislative draughtsmanship. May Dike For Hike Of Harbor MONTREAL (CP) -- Herb Land, chief engineer with the St. Lawrence River ship chan- nel, said Thursdayconstruction of a major dike in Lake St. Peter, 50 miles downstream from here, is being considered to raise the water level of Mont- real Harbor. Mr. Land said this proposal was among several considered during a four-year study of river behaviour. Speaking to the Kiwanis Club of Montreal, Mr. Land said a problem created by three hun- dred feet of clay in the lake bed would have to be overcome first. The advisory board . which governs the flow of water from Lake Ontario tapped water re- serves for the first time this wee k to raise levels in Montreal harbor and elsewhere down the St. Lawrence, Mr. Land said. Harbor's , advertised depth is 35 feet. "We estimate that the water storage we have been able to put aside will tide us over. the critical period which we expect will be with us until the end of the navigation season," he said.
