WHITBY And DISTRICT Miciieci doles iaiaac Whithy Bareas Office 111 Dundas St. West HURLED ONTO ROOF Tel. 668-3703 By MISS Don May, Whitby's ambu- lance operator, is ready for any emergency now. The secretary (and igeneral phone answerer) of the Ontario Humane Society, Whitby Branch, who never answers the phone without crossing her fingers and praying "Oh, please, no stray cats!" was doomed to F |disappointment. A neighbor's voice said: 'We've just picked up a little black kitten from the garbage behind the Dominion Siore; it was howling its little head off, and from the sound of things there must be more somewhere." So down went the book, out came the car, and with another neighbor, ever ready to help at a second's notice in case of ani- mal distress, there was a fast trip to the back of the Whitby Plaza. In a matter of minutes a suspieious movement in a large heavy paper bag labelled Hayhoe's Coffee led to the dis- covery of four tiny kittens, their eyes barely opened. London, Meuse Valley By JOHN GAULT (Whitby Editor) At this.point in our vy ecg of the "Killers In The Air," w: shall discuss some of the less common aspects of air pollu- tion, moving away from the clinical analysis which nas been prevalent in previous articles. Some of the most notably polluted areas in the world are London, England, and Los Angeles, California. In London, four major disas- ters have occurred through air- pollution since 1948. That year, in November, 600 people died, and dirt-strewn air was direct- ly or indirectly responsible. During the black month of September, 1962, when the heavy dirty smog hung in a pall for weeks, 4,000 Londoners died, In January, 1956, 500 lost their lives poo in December, 1957, another London, in all these cases, was enveloped in dense fog, coupled with what meteorolo- gists call a "thermal inversion." This is like an inverted cyclone, with the wide end close to the ground, and the area below in the still "eye." This also oc curs frequently in Los Angeles ----it was once referred to as "the Bay of Smokes." In London during these periods sickness started after 12 hours and became severe after three days. The older people suffered more but all age groups suffered) illness and death. Among the animals, only cattle suffered considerably, Chickens and other birds were adversely affected. Despite an impressive control program, Los Angeles, because of its industrial might, popula- tion, and especially its climactic position, remains one of the hardest - pressed cities in the United States. Its first "daylight dimout," occurred in 1943. For a period of time the sun was completely obscured by the smog and pollu- tion in the air. The worst siege, days of "day- light dimout"' occurred in 1954. Cars in L.A. throw out 70 per cent of the daily 5,500 tons of carbon monoxide. Some 1,500 tons of hydrocarbons enter the atmosphere, along with 600 tons of sulphur oxides. Besides these there are 750 tons of nitrogen oxides, and 400 tons of solid particles. Other areas in the world, some of them in Canada and the United States have suffered spec- tacularly from air-pollution. In Trail, British Columbia,, the home of ,lead and zinc smelters, sulphur dioxide gases rise about 1,000 feet in the ©! Columbia 'River valley, then descends back on the town. Extremely high concentrations of the gas occurred after the| smelters were set up in 1925, and continued until the com- panies reduced their fume emis- sion during the day. In a civil case against one of the smelters in 1931, for dam- ages to vegetation, the claimant was awarded $350,000. Since that time sulphur recovery has re- duced pollution .to about one quarter of what it was orig'. nally, | In Wawa, Ontario, fumes con- taining sulphur oxides from a sintering plant ruined 350 square miles of forest from 1957 to 1960. Donora, Pennsylvania, en- closed on all sides by the Stony Mountains was the victim of a thermal inversion and dense smog in October of 1948. In that became ill with respiratory ail- ments. Radiation, the blessed and the cursed innovation of our genera- tion is also becoming a threat to clean, healthy air, In 1957, an accident 'at a plutonium plant in Windseale, England rendered about 200,000 square miles of dairy country in northwest Eng- land unsafe for milk-production for several weeks. Because of course, there was no other answer, and young Dave McKay did a quick, neat job. But still a small voice cried despairingly, and was finally traced to the roof, in, on, or under a ventilator shaft above the Royal Bank. So with the sanction and presence of the police, a neighbor climbed to the sun-scorched roof and brought down another tiny ter- rified kitten, same size as the first one, and also black. The police agreed it could have got there by no other means -- it had been thrown up on the roof. A member of the Humane So- ciety took her home to feed and comfort her for the night, but next morning she also had to make her trip to the doctor's office with little item No. 1, where the needle mercifully POOLE OO EON EEE SE IEE IE yg ajterminated her unwanted exsis- tence. f But who are the so-called humans among us who are so cruel, so careless, so cowardly as to cause such suffering. At other times sickness and monetary losses have occutred. WHITBY month, 43 per cent of the popu- lation (5,910 persons) became ill by the third day, and about 20° died. Rain put an end to the disaster. In 1955 and 1956, in Gallipolis, Ohio, townspeople became sick to the point of vomitting when prevailing southwest winds blew fumes from a nearby chemical plant. Because of the thermal inversion and fog, the air was stagnant. The pollution lasted for hours at a time. A third great city, New York, has also felt the adverse effects of full - scale air - pollution. In 1956, 100 deaths over a four-day period were attributed to the presence of sulphur oxides in the stagnant air. Sulphur emissions from a smelter in Ducktown, Tennessee denuded forests and eroded soil over some 600 square miles, Con- trols were implemented and. at present, the captured sulphur dioxides exceed the refined cop- per in value. In one of the most highly in- dustrialized areas in the world, the Metlse Valley in Belgium, blast furnaces, steel mills, zinc mills, glass mills, coke ovens, a thermal power plant, a fertilizer plant, and a sulphuric acid plant are all concentrated in about 15 miles. In December of 1930 a heavy blanket of fog developed, coin-} a|ciding with a thermal inversion| and deg in static air with) no updraft. +-After about three days of these conditions, about 6,000 persons Sylvia and Gabriele Pommer- enke are spending the holiday| weekend in Wasaga Beach with| friends. | Best wishes for a happy birth- day are extended to Mrs. Barry McNamee, 137 Elizabeth cres-| cent, who is celebrating her| birthday today, August 1.
