For nearly 10 minutes the ovation thundered through New York's Madison Square Garden, last spring, and the chant We Want Barry became a roar. "You'll get him if you'll just be quiet," the senator shouted. Goldwater's reaction to that burst of cheers may be unique in presidential campaigning, but so in many ways, is Goldwater. The biggest triumph of his primary campaign -- in Cali- fornia -- wrought no change in the senator's nonchalant out- look. He welcomed it with word of thanks to his support- ers--then took the back door lodt of his hotel to avoid the crowd of jubilant fans. "He's not a man who likes to exploit his triumphs," said cam- paign director Denison Kitchel, "He acts pretty much in victory as he does in defeat." By his own account, Gold- water is bucking the trend of history in seeking the presi- dency as a senator from a small western state. OUTSPOKEN ON HUSTINGS And he has said some things on the campaign trail that would have had other politicians washing their own mouths with soap. "T'm not one of those baby- |kissing, hand - shaking, blintz- eating candidates," he said once. "I don't like to insult the American intelligence by think- ing that slapping people on the back is going to get you votes." to pioneer stock, and a grand- father who crossed the desert from California to Arizona to open the family store. One of his favorite campaign lines: "How he did it without federal aid, I'll never know." Goldwater is six feet tall and weighs about 185 pounds. He has an outdoorsman's tan. And he doesn't like to sit still very long. He has spent more than 8,000 hours aloft as a military pilot and covered well over 1,000,000 miles as a Republican party fund-raiser. Goldwater served six years as chairman of the Republican senatorial campaign committee. That thrust him into national prominence as a relatively junior senator. He is a major-general in the U.S. Air Force reserve, and one of two senators qualified to fly military jets. BORN IN PHOENIX Goldwater was born in Phoe- nix, the son of department store owner Baron Goldwater and a former Nebraska nurse. His mother had gone to Arizona with supposedly incurable tu- berculosis. Doctors gave her six months to live. She proved them wrong. Goldwater's father was Jew- ish. The senator, his brother Robert and sister Caroline were raised in their mother's Episco- pal faith. In Phoenix schools, Goldwater was an athlete, a class presi- dent--and no scholar. His par- en's sent him to Staunton Mili- Golwater traces his ancestry| Goldwater's 'Shaddup' Typical Of-Maverick | tary Academy in Virginia, and he was graduated in 1928. Goldwater spent a year at the University of Arizona, but quit shortly after his father died and went to work at the store. He became general manager in 1936, later president and then chairman. The family sold the department store business in 1963. He got into politics 15 years ago, running for the Phoenix City council on a reform ticket. SCORES UPSET A year later, he managed the campaign that made Republican Howard Pyle governor of Ari- zona. In 1952, he took on Demo- cratic Senator Ernest W. Mc- Farland, then rated Arizona's top vote-getter, and beat him by 7,000 votes. Goldwater won a rematch in 958, His wife, Peggy, has been at Goldwater's side on many of his campaign swings. She is sometimes shy, and it is no secret that she doesn't care for the campaign circuit, But in person - to - person chats with women along the campaign path, she has helped spread the Goldwater image and message. Sons Barry Jr. and Michael have done more travelling than their father at times, carrying the word to states the senator has not reached, speaking at colleges and thanking campaign workers. Daughters Jo Anne--who is Mrs. Thomas Ross of Torrance, Calif., and Peggy--newly-wed to Richard Holt of Los Angeles-- have chipped in, too, at teas and TOKYO (Reuters) -- Which- ever of many reasons' brings' foreign tourists to Japan this year, they will have one com- mon desire--to see the geishas, The literal translation of geisha is "art. person"--but art- ful would perhaps be a more exact description of these women, young and not so young, trained in every wile to play upon the 'frailties of the gullible male. Most geishas are: affluent in their late 20s, particularly these days when patrons think noth- ing of buying them a sleek car for Christmas and blocks of company shares at weekends, An evening with a geisha can be expensive. The equivalent of about $500 does not go far at a Tokyo geisha party today. Nor is.a geisha party any- thing approaching even a very discreet little "affair" on the side. The whole thing is so "cultural" that it has been known to bore many aa for- ing to sleep. The atmosphere is restful, yg the emphasis on simplic- ty. The guests are ushered, by giggly maids and a solicitous hostess, into a traditional Ja- panese all-purpose_ room. The room hag finely woven straw mats on the floor, a long, low table with cushions and portable lacquered arm-rests, an alcove with a painted scroll and a vase with delicately ar- ranged flowers. : SERVE SAKE Sake (rice wine) and in- credibly sweet cakes are served with bitter green tea. Geisha Girls Draw Tourists -- The status ity comes the confidante of busi- nessmen and politicians, | Madame Butterfly, vintage 1964, can sit with a financial ezar and talk banking or oil or shipping. She knows retail chain stores and mass catering and could probably teach Mon- aco how to run a tourist resort. She can play golf, drive a sports car, bowl and probably throw an average male with a judo flip. And she can strum a guitar, talk opera and the classics as well as naming every Beatle and the record on top of the Hit Parade in New York, Lon- don or Bombay. An Episcopalian, (Anglican) Goldwater doesn't campaign on Sundays. He has walked briskly through more than one Sunday- morning crowd of airport greet- ers. Goldwater has never mas- tered the quick and easy hand- shake--the hello-goodbye style of a Nel Rockefeller. He is at WEDDING dress, size i4, slip, veij and crown, Like new. Telephone 725-1409. Windfall's Owners Won't Talk TIMMINS (CP)--A tired-look- ing George and Viola MacMillan turned up in Timmins Thursday after being unavailable for questioning by reporters for al- most a week. The pair declined to comment on drilling results from the first hole sunk at the property of Windfall Mines and Oils Ltd. in Prosser Township near the site of the copper, zinc and silver find by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. of New York. "Just leave us alone and let us get on with mining," Mrs. MacMillan said. Her husband is Windfall's president and she has long been connected with mining develop- ment. Windfall skyrocketed 13 days ago from 31 cents a share to more than $4 a share on the Toronto Stock Exchange after rumors of a good drill hole swept the financial community. The exchange asked manage- ment for results of drilling on the property and was told one hole has been sunk but no as- says are available. The stock currently trades around the $4 level. 1, FRANK A.
