High MANCHESTER (Reuters)-- Britain's new 125-foot radio tele- scope, opened at the Jodrell Bank radio astronomy station| near here early in June, may help scientists to lift the veil of mystery surrounding the origin of the universe. When the telescope is in full operation, scientists will be able| to pick up high-frequency radio' impulses emitted from stars 6,000,000,000 light years from the earth. Although light and. radio waves travel at 186,000 miles a second, these stars are so far away that the signals being re- their journey before the earth was born. The scientists who analyse them are, in fact, looking 6,000,- 000,000 years into the past. The older 250-foot telescope at Jodrell Bank has already re- vealed an important clue in the origin .of the universe. It has discovered stars which, al- though no langer than the sun, contain 100,000 times as much energy. TIGHT-PACKED ATOMS These mysterious "quasi-stel- lar" stars have baffled physi- cists. One theory is that they are so dense that the atoms in them have no electrons and are packed tightly together, nucleus to nucleus. If the earth had the same density it would be the size of a football. When the new telescope starts operating, its first task will be ceived here today started out on) to study these stars. By B. Italy and Great Britain clash- ed in the 15th of the World Bridge played in New York in May. As expected, the match was close, Britain finally nosing out the fa- mous Italian Blue Team -- ¢ victory points to 3. This hand contributed might ily to the British victory. Ter- ence Reese and Boris Schapiro concoted a devilish line of de~ fense which succeeded in de- feating four hearts. Reese led the king of spades on which Schapiro played the queen, thus requesting a spade continuation and at the same time announcing that he had the jack. Reese returned a low spade and Schapiro won with the jack and continued with thy nine, forcing dummy to ruff. Declarer now led the ace of hearts, West playing the omi- nous nine, and then the ten from dummy, East ae low. If South had done up wii the king, he would have caught the queen and made 11 tricks. But in an effort to guard against the possibility of East's having started with four hearts to the queen, declarer finessed, losing to the queen. The safety finesse to try to as- sure the contract would certain- ly have succeeded in most hands, but in this case the fin- esse was fatal. Reese retarned the ace af spades and South was forced te ruff with the only trump in dummy, the eight. On this trick, a discarded his singleton club. When declarer now played a low club in order to get to his hand to draw East's remai trump, East ruffed and was down one. At the second table, the Brit- ish declarer made four hearts against a different line of de- fence. East-West cashed twe spades, but then shifted to a diamond, Declarer misguessed the heart situation at this table also, but the only tricks he lost were two spades and a heart. The British team gained 470 | points on the hand, Mrs. Gandhi Praised BOMBAY (CP)--The potem '| tialities of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the late prime minister Nehru's daughter and India's new ine formation and broadcasting minister, are being widely dis cussed here. There are reports in the press that the cabinet appointment, her first in the government, is only the -beginning of a full- fledged political career, Prime Minister Shastri is said to be grooming her for the post of external affairs minister. At present, Shastri himself is looking after the portfolio of ex- ternal affairs, but there has been a persistent clamor in the ruling Congress party that there should be a separate minister for foreign affairs. Th fact that Shastri fell il! the prime ministership has strengthened the demand that he should delegate more of his powers. It is generally believd in political and official circles that Shastri dsignated Mrs, Gandhi to represent Inda at the Lon- don Commonwealth conference along with Finance Minister T. - T. Krishnamachari to give her an opportunity to demonstrate her diplomatic talents. Mrs. Gandhi was Nehru's con- stant companion and became acquainted with the top states men of the world. Within the Indian cabinet it- self, Mrs, Gandhi has an im- portant role to play as the mediator between the right, centre and left groups, CELEBRATE JUBILEE The boy scouts of Fiji this year celebrate their 50th an- niversary.
